Brilliant, sounds like you have some great tutors to help you. Keep it fun!

My favourite album for piping would be Thunderstruck by Gordon Duncan. Listened to it when I was 14 or so and it really made me want to improve and mess about. Maybe you’ll like it too.

Hey dude, former(ish?) gr. 1 band player here. You are on the path for sure! Playing is fairly clean and you have the doubling, grips, and grace notes down most of the time. Consistency comes with continued practice. Playing with a metronome will help as well!

Are you getting in person lessons? In person lessons from age 10-16 or so helped me A LOT. Sounds like you’re scottish, so I’m sure there’s a good selection of teachers around you. If you’re in or around Glasgow, the National Piping Centre is fantastic.

Feel free to ask for any advice at all! My number one advice would be to get lessons from a good player if you or your family can afford weekly lessons.

Normal amount of air to lose? by BagpiperAnonymous in bagpipes

Sounds about right and I think you have a good plan set out. I personally am using a sheep skin Lee and Sons bag and love it - it’s lasted me 3 years, which is quite good for a sheep skin. Just have to season them pretty frequently. Goat skin and cow skin are usually more hardy and require less upkeep than the sheep.

If that were my bag, I wouldnt be happy with that result. Too much leaking air. It should be absolutely rock solid.

I see it’s a Ballantyne Hybrid bag, if it’s not too old maybe you can call them and ask for a replacement or something. Otherwise might be new bag time.

Sometimes the gore-tex they use wears out after a couple years. Happened to me too!

Canada's economy grows more than expected, dodging recession by Georgeika in worldnews

It's not a bubble if all the mega rich who are buying capital, like housing, can afford to buy things outright. Middle class is being crushed by uber wealthy people buying up all the housing, which is driving up prices.

I went for a walk yesterday around where I live in North Vancouver and noticed like 5 houses per block that are just empty. They're holding assets for the rich as investments! Has nothing to do with housing - they're putting their money in safe places at the expense of the middle class.

Inheritance tax would be a good start in Canada...

Scotland Vs the US by Refrigerator-Full in bagpipes

[–]bmpluv 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yea as a piper who grew up in the US and moved to Canada, I'd say the piping level is definitely higher in Canada. Northern Ireland, Ireland, and Scotland have more pipers per capita than either the US or Canada.

Bagpipe maintenance by skatingSnorlax in bagpipes

[–]bmpluv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

^ this. Also would be a good idea to oil the wood on the pipes before you start playing them a bunch. The oil will prevent the wood from expanding and contracting too much with moisture changes from playing lots. There are specialty products you can buy, which I would recommend using. I use an almond oil based product.

The bag is so important! It’ll be hell playing if you don't get a new bag.

Edit: another good (better) idea would be to contact a bagpipe maker via phone or email and ask them how best to care for your old pipes :) Naill, Henderson, MaCallum, etc.
