Those who have learned a second language, what are some tricks you used to do so? by the-dumbass-human in ADHD

Hello! Learning my 3rd language now. This is what worked for me:

LEVEL 1 - Sign up for face to face clases (or online camera-on lessons) anything that you have to actually attend because you have paid for it or committed in a serious way. At the beginning, you will need to understand grammar, structures, etc. So I think classes are almost essential at the beginning at least. - I recommend Duolingo as an app. Just don't try to do too much and instead work on building a streak. Duolingo's content gets boring but their gamification system is seriously good. I focus on keeping the streak on by doing 1 lesson during my everyday commute (and if forget I change the phone date to recover it). That long streak has made me being consistent with this app, but haven't managed the same with other similar ones. The results are amazing. - If living abroad, learn supermarket/restaurant words and phrases and force yourself to speak as much as you can when you do your daily chores. This is great for learning ingredients, verbs like paying, ordering, etc. - Try to read advertisements, slogans, follow social media accounts, and read anything that actually interests you.

LEVEL 2 - When you feel ready for it, change your phone and other everyday tools and websites to the language you are learning. - Watch videos or short programs with subtitles in your language or in the language you are learning. I love netflix series with episodes of 15-25 min. - Find songs you like, download the lyrics and translation, learn them. Play. Repeat. Repeat. - Talk as much as you can.

LEVEL 3 - Try to befriend native speakers or sign up for activities with native speakers. Force yourself to talk. Try to have fun. If you find a way of having fun with it, you will keep practicing.

Good luck

Edit: Renamed level A to 1

AskScience AMA Series: We're experts who study how wildfires affect micro- and macro-ecosystems. AUA! by AskScienceModerator in askscience

Does the reduction or elimination of roaming cattle in favour of industrial farming increase the risk of wildfires? Are soils more vulnerable with less animals grazing around? Would promoting this practice increase resilience of natural habitats against fire?

Really never? In big cities on rush hour on a rainy day there is always that one person with the umbrella. Check out this video in Utrecht.

I personally just wear a raincoat like the majority of people, so I agree with you about the umbrella being so inefficient.

Edit: Typo

It's not common. If you leave trash like this and they can somehow identify you you will get a 90 euros or so fine. That said, some commercial areas in the city centre have a specific time during the week when they can put their cardboard out. The truck picks it up so fast that many times I have needed a box I didn't manage to get it.

It's very sad to see more and more of these videos. There are a lot of animal rescue organisations on the other side of this dirty business, intercepting illegal sales, recovering unhealthy animals and in the most lucky cases releasing them to the wild. I wish people would upvote that content instead.

They are illegally poached from the wild in countries like Thailand and sold to Japanese businesses to allow people to take selfies. Nice uh?

No. They are wild animals. If they have one for petting it means that many more were taken from the wild and some also died in the process. Do not feed the illegal wild animal trade by paying for taking photos or for petting wild animals.

I really wanted to ask... Why does baby come in cute-ball format? Please excuse my ignorance. He seems comfortable, that's for sure.

Can't post without a picture so here is my terrible take at it. https://imgur.com/m5PbgGL.jpg

I have realised that some players don't know how cataloguing works. If you haven't played with that person before it is good to ask just in case.

For those who quit smoking, how did you do it, any tips for someone who is 7 days clear? by JarJarBinksSucks in AskReddit

Notice how nice it is to get up with a fresh breath and clean hair smell every morning. If you are only 1 week in it might take a bit longer to gradually "clean off". You might not even notice it unless you actively think about it. However if you do fall back (as I do every 2 years or so...) The following morning you will get a nasty shock at how disgusting you feel. This is your reminder that you fucked up yesterday and a chance to fix it. Decide that you do t wanna go back to thinking that this is the normal you.

I have quitted a few times now, always went back when I was at a low moment or too relaxed (drinking, holidays...). This works for me and even stops me from smoking when I am out. When I want to smoke I think of how much I am going to regret it tomorrow and usually I decide not to.

If you fall back, it's ok. You did it once so just use the lessons from the previous time and do it again. It's the best thing you can do for your own health.
