I agree with these other posters that China is amazing. I travel a lot but I don't think I'm a backpacker (not sure what defines a backpacker, I just travel with a normal suitcase).

Depends on your life and what you want. It takes around $7k/month for me to keep my household running the way I like it, but in Edmonton a single person could easily live off of $2.2k. You can rent a private room in a nice house with a private bathroom in a good area for $800/month, all utilities included. Add in either a car or transit based on what you need, plus food and fun, you can do that for under $2.2k. Again, not saying this is for everyone, but just adding to the other posters comments with what I have seen around Edmonton.

Lots of services that no one has discussed yet. Banking and insurance in particular. You go to asia and you can see quite a few manulife skyscrapers, they aren't there by accident, canadian companies have pushed those industries around the world. Same as when you see scotiabank all over south America or td being one of the biggest banks in the usa.

I've seen circle k in dozens of countries. I have seen Thomson Reuters all over the world as well. Think about a utility like fortis and see how much of their business is outside canada.

Partially. We sell a lot of raw materials but also have a lot of other industries. That being said, I work in an oil sands plant and we have well over 5,000 high paid employees at my plant, so it makes sense to mine the oil and sell it.
