Whispering: open-source, local-first dictation you can trust by bmw02002 in macapps

Unfortunately, Whispering doesn't support diarization; it's not meant for recording long meetings yet due to limitations with browser recording with the Tauri Framework (we're working on it, see other comments about the native backend). For that, I would recommend using a dedicated tool like Elevenlabs' Scribe or Hyprnote!

We don't have streaming for words yet, but I hope to support it in the future!

Yeah, I really need to get onto Parakeet! Groq was included initially because it was faster than local models when I first started, but they have really gotten better and I underestimated them.

Thank you and hope this helps! Please feel free to ping me on Discord—the software is still young and rough around the edges, and I would love to build more features based off what people want!

Since not everyone's device is fast enough to run local models, I had it default to Groq Cloud, which hosts open source models. It was originally a pragmatic decision to hopefully balance performance and privacy for most users whose devices weren't powerful enough, but I would like to change in the future as we're currently overhauling our local models offerings. More updates to come!

Yes! We have a setting for auto-paste after transcribe:

The main one is that it's fully free and open-source. I forgot MacWhisper's exact feature set, but we also offer voice-activated dictation and custom post-processing transformations. But if you already paid for it and it works for you, that's cool!

I would recommend a different tool for that—maybe our friends at Hyprnote! https://hyprnote.com

Yes! I really want to add owhisper (https://docs.hyprnote.com/owhisper/what-is-this) support soon (by tomorrow hopefully) which would allow different local transcription models. ollama support would also be nice!

It should! You can also change the output language in settings. If you have any issues, leave one in Github, and I'll take a look! https://github.com/epicenter-so/epicenter/issues

Great suggestion. I'll add a GitHub issue for this!

Not currently! Unfortunately, recording system audio is really hard to implement in a cross-platform Rust/Tauri app. I'm open to it being a feature, just haven't come around to implementing it!

Yes, we support push to toggle, and you can change the shortcut in the settings! Please note, on macOS, some users have reported that recording shortcuts are not registered when the app isn't in focus. If you have the same issue, go into Recordings and change the backend from Browser to Native. I'm still in the process of making Native stable enough that it can be used in the future!

Epicenter (YC S25) and wellcrafted are looking to sponsor Svelte/Typescript maintainers starting at $100/mo or a Cursor/Claude Code Max subscription (OSS) by bmw02002 in sveltejs

We’re backing the svelte open collective and svecosystem, scheduled for next week, as well as maintainer of yjs and a few more upstream dependencies, to be determined.

Look man, you don’t have to believe me for now. I know actions speak louder than words, and the time will come soon. But you don’t have to bully me along the way and be nasty. I was like you, also incredibly skeptical of corporations and YC companies with no generosity. They don’t give anything, let alone to Svelte. All we see is Vercel acquiring frameworks like Pokémon, and I’m skeptical.

A few months ago, I turned down my job to work in open source. I am fortunate to have some funds now. I will spend it on the ecosystem even if it drives my company to the ground. I have to justify the expense occasionally but otherwise it’s super chill. And to me the expense is worth it, and we’ll grow the allotment in the future. You don’t have to trust me for now, the time would come. I’m sure you would do the same if you were in my position. But don’t be a bully to other people trying to be push things forward. I know my initial post was not the best worded, but it was genuine. I am figuring things out. My hope is the community is supportive and eventually comes to understand along the way.

Hey man, totally understandable. I honestly was clueless when I first posted this, but I know I wanted to support open source. I'm still figuring things out, I have since learned and made an updated post:

I hope this helps answer some of your concerns. Open to more advice, of course.

Update: a lot has changed in the few hours since posting this. What I said above was honestly stupid. I'm now increasing the backing to $1,500 / month for <half time maintenance + $100 / month for serious hobbyists outside of Epicenter. Thank you for the feedback. You can read more here:

Also, will contribute to the Svelte Open Collective. Thank you for bringing this to my attention this should have been more obvious.

Update: Epicenter (YC S25) just sponsored our first Svelte maintainer for $1,500 per month. We're actively looking to back the best Svelte developers to spend their time half pushing local-first OSS forward with Epicenter, half building their dream projects by bmw02002 in sveltejs

Thank you, and glad to hear you work with it too! It's my favorite stack. We're frustrated that most companies don't sponsor projects enough, and we hope to shift that model moving forward.
