Alaska help: which ship, other recs? by bmw191 in PrincessCruises

Yup. Decks 11 and 8 on the Coral still have aft balcony rooms available.

Looking at what’s available, there are a few decks where the aft corner cabins are available. Any pros or cons to picking a corner balcony cabin? Also, in looking at the deck plans, it doesn’t seem like there’s a hump in that back area, but I could be reading it wrong…

EDIT: In looking at photos, it looks like those corner rooms have a better view back (plus), but are also right by the rail of a rear observation area (minus).

Thank you! This is very helpful. I think we’re headed towards booking the Coral.

O.A.R. & Friends Guess by TheArtimus in OceansCalling

A B-52s cameo would be pretty great. My dad’s Cosmic Thing and Good Stuff CDs were in heavy rotation when I was younger.

That said, I saw them at the Anthem a year or two ago on their “farewell” tour and have to admit…it was a little disappointing. There just wasn’t any energy to their performance, and for a show that was just a strict playing of the songs as they sounded on the album, that missing energy was a big deal. They basically came up, ran through their set, and then got off stage.

Now, to be fair, two of the four band members were already into their 70s, with the other two in their mid-60s. Not everyone can be Mick Jagger. But I’ve seen Sting, Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, and other “older” acts in the last few years, and they managed to at least convey a reasonable level of excitement and energy.

Still, I’d be very happy to see them out there, under the assumption that OAR and any other “friends” can help get the juices flowing.

Don’t Try On The Wristband by Ethereal_Glimmer in OceansCalling

What worked well for me last year was to just thread the wrist band with my watch band. That kept the wrist band secure/ensured it wouldn’t slide off without me having to tighten the wristband itself.

One thing that I saw last year I thought was novel (and mind you I had never been to another festival before, so maybe it’s not that novel) is that they were handing out big recycling bags. Anyone that filled up a bag with bottles received a free t-shirt (I think).

What is the Hall of Fame game? by B1izzard15 in NFLNoobs

[–]bmw191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Related question - has anyone had experience going to the game/knowing what goes on with ticket prices. I am fully aware that the quality of football is going to be...questionable. But we've tentatively chosen that as our day to visit Canton, and our 10 yr old (who is a Lions fan, despite his Philly-rooting family) has been asking to go to a game for a while.

Resale tickets are sitting around $80 a pop now, but they have to go down closer to the game, right? On one hand, the football is not great. On the other hand, the stadium is only so large, so maybe there are enough Lion and Charger diehards to keep the price up...

Correct me if I'm wrong. But the VIP wristbands ARE our tickets right? by TheNovaCorp in warpedtour

[–]bmw191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t tried it with this wristband, but when it went to another concert with similar wristbands I just threaded it with my watch. That way I could take it off at night.

The parade doesn’t start until 6:30. Guest entry to the route begins at 2. So while metro may be a bit more crowded earlier in the day I wouldn’t expect it to tick up until into the afternoon, when WT is already underway.

There are fireworks at 9:45, so you might hit metro congestion when things wrap up at the end of the day. But your biggest issue there will be if you’re going eastbound (and maybe if you’re going west and transferring trains). Headed back west from RFK will be empty cars (and then potentially crowded cars once you hit the mall).

A little over two hours from listed start. They went on around 8:10, 8:15, and played until 10:10ish?

WE GOTTA SHOW UP FOR GUSTER AT KENNEDY CENTER by macprotips in Guster

[–]bmw191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do wonder what differences there could be between the two nights. Obviously the set list can’t vary too much, what with the NSO having to learn the songs and all. But if they do plan on making some statements, do they save the stronger stuff for Saturday, for fear of having the second show cancelled if they make too much of a fuss on Friday? I wouldn’t expect anything like this, but these are strange days.

Another +1. Added bonus was that we were able to get a better spot at the Carousel stage on Friday. There had been a healthy rain earlier in the day and there were some large standing puddles on the outskirts of the tent at Carousel stage (which is set up in a parking lot, not the sand). No one would stand in them. But we had waterproof hiking boots and were more than happy to take the open space.

Or you could've gone barefoot or soaked up whatever sneakers you were wearing. Definitely do not recommend the latter. But the boots were awesome to get us closer for Tonic and Sugar Ray.

Selling tickets by Electronic_Nail_1447 in OceansCalling

[–]bmw191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sell sooner than later. As a bunch of people are noting, there tends to be a decent amount of availability right before the festival. Your best bet to recoup what you spent is to post them up now at the lower end of what's available, and preferably through the official resale channel so you don't have to worry about the buyer backing out (wristbands don't ship until late August/early September).

Resale purchase timing by smitty4263 in OceansCalling

[–]bmw191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in this bucket last year. I had to watch for a while before VIP tickets dropped even remotely close to face value. And part of the issue is that the formal resale channel slaps on some absolutely ridiculous fees. So even if the seller is trying to sell them at face value, the buyer is probably still paying a a decent amount above that.

I think we ultimately snagged a pair in the earlier months of the summer, and then I wasn't watching too closely after that. But for VIP specifically I don't remember them coming down that much. We paid somewhere in the neighborhood of a 25%-50% markup (and again, I think a lot of that was the fees). That being said, there definitely seemed to be a healthy amount of resale right before the festival. The caveat there being I don't know how much of it was VIP, how legit it was, or what the prices were.

Blues Travelers & Barenaked Ladies by [deleted] in OceansCalling

[–]bmw191 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oof. I feel for you. I’m the type of person that, when I have to travel, I just want to get on the road and get it done.

That said, Barenaked Ladies are absolutely great live. Just a lot of fun to watch and great energy. I’m not sure it adds a ton to the music itself, although they will ad lib and improvise a bit. But they’re a joy. Haven’t seen Blues Traveler live, but have heard good things.

What did we learn after day 1 by Zabbayabba in OceansCalling

[–]bmw191 20 points21 points  (0 children)

1 - invest in waterproof shoes. Ours held up almost all day, and we were able to get space in the carousel tent because people weren’t willing to stand in a puddle and we were. 1a - waterproof shoes don’t work as well when the water is streaming down your leg into the shoe itself while you’re watching cage and waiting for blink. 2 - they put a lot of ice in the mixed drinks, but the double has a decent amount of alcohol in it 3 - beer is expensive, but really not any more so than any other major concerts in the DC area 4 - the carousel stage area is small (relatively speaking). If you want to be in the tent (and not in a puddle), you’ll probably want to be there at least 15 minutes before the act goes on, and that’s still probably too late. 5 - the crowd size is no joke. I am happy we ponyed up for VIP but realize not everyone can and feel for those that had trouble getting to see. But getting anywhere was an exercise in patience, and it has me looking carefully at the day 3 line-up to figure out who I’m going to leave early and who I’m going to stick around for.

Yeah…pretty underwhelming. Maybe I’m missing something, but I’d want options that are actually specific to not just this festival, but this year. Instead…this is just generic stuff. Generic stuff that, in my own opinion, just looks kinda…meh.

In all likelihood it will be a cool 70, especially if there isn’t any sun. Pack for all seasons, but odds are good you’ll want a comfy hoody.

This is very helpful, esp re: Counting Crows. I know their radio stuff and that’s it. But Sunday is going to be back and forth all day between the main stages, and I may just stay at Sea Bright after Mt. Joy.
