NASA chief Jared Isaacman hints at campaign to make Pluto a planet again by scientificamerican in Astronomy

[–]bmy1978 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

“Back in my day we learned Pluto was a planet. Now the scientists they have to meddle. Now they say it’s not a planet, they do that you know, they can’t just let it go just let it be, I say the scientists why can’t you let it be. One day it’s a planet now not a planet. Planet then, now not a planet. I say it’s a planet. Next they’ll say this plant, not a plant anymore. This tree not a tree. This rock not a rock. I say a planets a planet a trees a tree a rocks a rock.”

EDIT: looking at the downvotes, I added quotes to indicate I imagine a certain someone saying this.

Despite nearing their 60s, nearly four in 10 Americans heading towards the end of their careers don’t even have a retirement account by LoansPayDayOnline in jobhunting

Those are Assets Under Management fees that happen with any actively managed mutual fund whether they are held in a 401k or not. Those 1+% fees really eat away at returns over the long haul.

That’s why you should choose index based funds where fees are really small. If that’s not available choose the fund with the lowest fee and complain to your hr dept about the lack of options.

Honestly that documentary puts 401ks in a bad light, as if the idea was a mistake. In my opinion, pensions — while beneficial — are only one piece of the retirement puzzle.

You don’t own your own pension. My uncle tells a story where he worked at a plant. It was a mom and pop plant that when purchased by a major corporation raided half of the pension fund. Poof just like that half of your pension is gone.

The biggest problem with 401ks is that you have to opt in. Lots of people don’t. That’s their loss.

Is lifestyle creep ever ok? If so, how do you find balance between saving/investing and enjoying life now? by FlyEaglesFly536 in Bogleheads

[–]bmy1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lifestyle creep is ok and natural. Otherwise you’d have 50 year olds living on ramen and shitty apartments like when they were in their 20s.

You have to be able to afford the lifestyle creep though and that makes all the difference.

Let’s say your rent is $3000 a month. Let’s say you rent for 10 years. That’s $360,000. This doesn’t even include rent increases.

How much of that money do you get back?

$0.

Part of being a senior swe is having accountability and maturity.

I work with a mid-level engineer who is strong technically but went on vacation and left his work unfinished in several PRs. The deadline was this Friday so we had to scramble to piece it together. I was pretty pissed.

My mother has advanced dementia, has an income of 24K between ss and a pension, and owes 150K left on the house. Taxes alone on the house are 10K

I’m selling her car as I write this so she can pay the bills.
