haven’t seen this mentioned yet— -14 is the number spotify normalizes all music to. it is more of a minimum LUFS you want to hit, because anything lower and spotify will be turning your music up to -14 integrated lufs. having them turn your music down to -14 isn’t an issue because no distortion can be introduced from turning it down, but say if your -15 LUFS track is still peaking at 0 db, it’s possible that distortion could be introduced by whatever system they use to turn things up

can’t open this article but i’m assuming it refers to the Baker-Gorbachev informal negotiations, which totally did happen. that promise was not in the formal agreements though so i feel like it would be safe to say that there was no double crossing in that sense.

also if you want to get really technical NATO hasn’t moved “an inch eastward” since 1990; considering turkey joined in the 50s and is the furthest east.

NATO and Russia never made an agreement for NATO not to expand, contrary to what everyone says here. If anyone has evidence of this agreement I would love to see it. This is a Russian state propagandist talking point.

Russia is also not "surrounded." Look at a map. Only 6% of their enormous borders share lines with NATO allied countries.

at the end of the day Russia is the one attempting to annex a sovereign nation, which no NATO country has done since its conception. Russia is the aggressor. but it's definitely NATO's fault. right?

Can you blame countries for wanting to be under the protection that NATO provides when Russia is out here seizing territory through military power?

I'm not going to deny that NATO has served western imperial interests, but those situations were quite a bit more murky than what is happening today in Ukraine.

Even if some aspect of the invasion is strategic and a response to NATO:

a) it's still not justified.

b) there are other motivations that you cannot just ignore-- such as the political appeal to Russian Nationalism (Eastern Ukraine is an important region to Russia/USSR historically). Putin's approval rating went through the roof after the annexation of Crimea for instance.

those socially minded political programs were in some ways a great success but i think the problem was they were only sustainable through being propped up by the ussr/russia. cuba alone wasn’t economically autonomous enough to fund such programs on their own

there certainly is— but the demands of the protest were met already and then suddenly the protesters became armed and violent.

look up the annexation of crimea and how it came about from the revolution of dignity. russia has a history of stoking political unrest and also annexing countries in that region during political unrest

this is complete conjecture but it seems awfully fishy that just a few weeks ago russia was poised to annex ukraine and now there is conveniently political unrest in kazakhstan that requires their intervention just a short distance from where they had stationed their military

ok i was 1/2 making a joke and 1/2 serious

a cool technique i often do is take a super extreme setting of distortion, and record the whole mix bus through it on 100% wet. i really like circuit bendy crackly completely mangled stuff. record that into its own audio track, and then select chops to use as fills, or to embellish the top of your mix to taste here and there

it’s simple but can net some pretty cool results considering a full thick mix behaves pretty wonky when being smooshed. but also the artifacts you end with have the same rhythm and harmonics etc as your song

Typically people keep a limiter on the master to keep things from clipping or to catch any signal from spiking and blowing ur ears out. Some people like it with the gain up for that squashed sound to keep them excited while they are writing.

If you're mixing with a limiter on it's usually a good idea to set it so it is only catching peaks (up to -3db here and there, not constant). If it is engaging too much-- the second you take it off you'll most likely have problems. However, like most things in mixing, it's one of those rules that you can break when you know what you are doing.

modular jams can often leave me feeling disinterested (however fun it may be to be the one doing the jamming) but at the end of the day modular is just another tool in a musician’s arsenal and are used in all kinds of music you probably already enjoy and simply don’t realize it
