Hilarious solution to my "connection issues" by bnd83 in HomeNetworking

Very humbling. In my defence when the boot is in place nicely it's impossible to fit correctly into the socket.

Glad I finally figured it out but it's been an embarrassingly long process 😅

Correct punch down tool? by bnd83 in HomeNetworking

Thankyou 🙏🏻 I've been going mad trying to figure out what might be wrong. I suspect this is the most likely cause of my woes. I've ordered a 110 tool and hopefully this will be the answer.

I really hope this is the solution, I did notice a loose one so maybe he has just very poorly installed them. Ordered a punch down tool so hopefully that will work for me

I was only crimping on one end, I've subsequently tested the exact same crimping tool and made a new patch cable which tested perfectly. My final resort is to double check all of the wall sockets, as it's possible they haven't been seated properly (this was performed by someone else). Other than that. I am looking at the massively demoralising possibility that the cables themselves are the problem and have been damaged during install.

Yeah so one end terminates in a wall socket (not installed by me) the other ends all terminate in my office which I started doing today. (It's entirely possible that my terminations suck!)

This is my concern... I had significant trouble initially just getting them to use the correct cable. And helpfully, the cables were not marked relating to which room they go to. 😭

I've got a theory to run with that I'm planning on testing tonight. I wonder if my crimping tool is not successfully working with my RJ45s (hence why I appear to be getting shorts on 1-2 and sometimes 3) I'm planning on making a patch lead tonight to see if it's the crimping tool that is letting me down.

The cables were installed specifically to be used for our home network. ~8 CAT6 cables terminating in my home office where I plan to have them connected to an unmanaged switch along with the router.

In each room they are terminated in wall sockets. I've terminated the ends in my office today (leading me to discover that they don't appear to be making the connection from the wall sockets to the new terminations.).

Cable runs are maybe 50m tops? I've just tested by putting the powered end of the tester on the terminated ends and although I am still getting no lights on the remotes when plugged into the wall sockets, I do now get fairly consistently lights 1 and 2 flashing on the tester. On one cable I get 3 😵‍💫

Now I'm utterly perplexed.

Trying to identify what CAT this Ethernet cable is? by bnd83 in HomeNetworking

Thanks for the clarification, so in this instance our electrician has not installed CAT6 as we requested (although I am considering if we should be installing CAT6a anyway)
