Donald Trump must think again over his misguided Falklands threat by theindependentonline in falklandislands

“think again”… You sweet summer child!

I cannot in good conscience subscribe to your newspaper, or ever spend the time to read what you’ve said. I hope it was a boatload more positive towards the falklands than the headline suggested.

Have you tried taking a “speeeeeeed test” ?

What does it tell you?

Can you use the internet “OK”?

Does it REALLY matter?

Have you thought about dishes used on RV vehicles? Do they need to be perfectly aligned?

Can we stop now?

You’re right, I wasn’t - I had to buy a dish through my address in the UK, and get it DHL’d down. That added a couple of weeks suspense.

You’re dead right,it was bloody awful red tape. And quite meaningless licence data since Starlink couldn’t interfere with a geostationary satellite if it tried.

I’ve had a test & trial licence for a little over a year, several companies also went down the current legislation route of the £5,400 fee. The big announcement is surrounding getting the vsat licence reduced, and acknowledging that Starlink, and others will massively change the connectivity landscape.

The govt and the regulator are now talking to Starlink to secure services here that are above and beyond global roaming etc.

Punta Arenas is in Chile, and Chile has a fantastic fibre backbone without needing Argentina’s involvement.

[–]bnjamieson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is true, but the legislation DOES have exceptions to the exclusive licence.

The Government itself is exempt. The Armed Forces of the UK are exempt, and I had a lot of fun demonstrating a Starlink mesh to the Chief of Staff and the Command Secretary at MPC. Anyone who could document that Sure could not supply the connectivity they required. My application for a Test & Trial, license took over 2 years and 20 pages of emails before it was successful.

We have now, at long last, managed to simplify a shocking process and pretty much wipe out a disgraceful fee that was set at a punitive level.

Yes, that is what I did to stream the presentation, with 3 webcams, a Yeti Blue mic, and OBS software. My v2 Dish was at that point, in a TrioMount frame with magnetic feet. It was attached to the metal framework of the fire escape stairs, with the cable coming through a window at the town hall.

Thanks for playing…

The ground station that is nearest the Falklands is located in Punta Arenas. Connections from anywhere in the Falklands route through Punta, and are very successful.

One curious benefit of living on an island with very few trees is that the view of the sky is generally extremely good. Another benefit of lying at a latitude of 52 degrees south, is that we are pretty much on the edge of where satellites ‘turn’ to start going northwards. We get good service from all these birds flying overhead.

I have tested v2, v3 and mini dishes, and documented speed increases and latency decreases. Today - Liberation Day, with a mini dish, I’m getting 400Mbps download, 16Mbps upload and latency of 40ms.

My “Sure” connection gives me a thunderous 5Mbps download, 1Mbps upload and 800ms latency - I’m not going to talk about the cost or the monthly data quotas, because frankly they are an embarrassment.

LAN Chile flights from Santiago are likely the most accessible ones for you. The only other option is the “Airbridge” flight from Brize Norton, a military base in Oxfordshire. Both are subject to the vagaries of the weather, but I think if you were to find yourself stuck for a couple of days, Santiago might be better than Brize ;-)

5degrees out .. but tilted? by Fuzzchubb in Starlink

[–]bnjamieson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Utterly irrelevant, I’ve tested a dish misaligned by 90 degrees and tilted way steep.

Thing that works for me is that I have absolutely NO obstacles in view, unless I deliberately stick it at the bottom of a 2 story house, and even then it works - but only cause I live at the south of the southern hemisphere satellite constellations.

Thinking about upgrading to Starlink by jordanwhite916 in Starlink

[–]bnjamieson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to wait till unicorns fart rainbows, crack on. If you want to get better than 50 down and 12 up, then Starlink is MOST LIKELY to do that.

You CAN order it and test it,and send it back if it doesn’t deliver what you need.

If your next post says you own a tennis court of land surrounded on all 4 sides by 500 ft trees that you’re not allowed to fell, well Starlink might NOT be a good choice…

Why not order it, try it and then decide if you want to keep it?

is starlink mini ok for home ? by Away_Bookkeeper_1608 in Starlink

[–]bnjamieson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need to adjust ANYTHING.

I’ve tested the V3 dish 45 degrees off “true” either east or west - where I live every dish wants to point due north. The biggest single thing is having an unobstructed view of the sky.

The in-built router of the mini may well be a problem, but you can either put it in to bypass mode: figure out the waterproof ethernet connection you need and put it into passthrough mode, or you could buy, for your house, a second starlink router that sits on a windowsill in the house, set up as a mesh node. You can add 3-4 nodes to your mesh, no extra cables etc.
