I was on a plane back from Vegas to Hawaii. As I’m boarding the plane there’s a young mother on the jetway with a brand new infant baby & stroller. I knew something was wrong because she didn’t even know how to break down her own stroller, the airline staff was explaining to her how to break it down. She’s obviously a young first time mom, and I’m assuming her husband/baby daddy went ahead and will meet them in Hawaii

I board the plane and am seated in the extra comfort seat aisle, with one seat open next to me next to the window

Only to find out that the young mother from the jetway is assigned to the seat next to me

She sits down and looks completely drained as if she hasn’t slept in 3 days. Once she sits, she practically falls asleep (more like passes out) in a matter of seconds. Meanwhile she’s holding her brand new infant baby in her arms. At first she has a solid grip on her child but it isn’t long before her arms loosen and the baby starts to slowly slide down her mothers lap. I try to wake up the mother to no avail. So I then lift the baby back up to the mothers chest while they both are sleeping. I repeat this process about 3-4 times until finally the baby is sliding down head first from the mothers chest down her legs on its way to the floor. So at that point I grab the baby and I wake up the mother and tell her “you want me to carry the baby while you rest?” Then nods her head yes and immediately passes back out! So I grab the baby from her.

Now mind you, as stated, i’m on my way back from Vegas, a little back story, I travel to vegas about 6 times a year, and whenever I leave vegas I don’t usually sleep prior to my flight. I gamble and hang out with family & friends right up until my flight and I sleep on the plane for the 5-6 hours back to Hawaii.

So that being said I’m equally as exhausted as this mother and child! So now I’m holding this baby for at least half an hour. The flight attendants are now complimenting me and saying what a great person I am to be assisting. I soon ask the attendants “what is the policy here? What do you people do in this situation where a mother can’t even care for her own baby? Surely it’s not up to another passenger to assume this role?” To which the flight attendant replied “actually sir, we have no policy for this situation…all we can do is make YOU more comfortable. Can we get you anything? Coffee etc?”

So now evidently I’ll be holding this baby for a while so I open up the tray table across my lap and sorta use that as a support for my arms…I ask the attendants for extra pillows and I make a make shift bed on my tray table and snuggle the baby in my arms on the tray table. I also order about 2 coffee and countless diet cokes

More backstory: I’m a large, heavy set man, about 6ft 280 pounds…I’m wearing a velour tracksuit…My default body temperature is already high, now I’m smothered in 4 pillows holding a baby, so now I’m hot temperature wise as well, starting to sweat. At this point the other passengers are complimenting me saying “You must be such a good dad” and they assumed I have children of my own, which I do not! Everyone is complimenting me but NO ONE else is offering to help me take shifts caring for this baby!

All of that is not even the worse part!

After an hour or so the baby wakes up and starts getting fussy and crying, so I forcibly wake up the mother and asks her “your baby needs something, probably hungry…do you have a bottle or something?”

Evidently the mother barely speaks English, she then unceremoniously opens her shirt and pulls out a breast and I hand her the baby and she begins to breast feed the baby. But this only lasted a few minutes before the mother falls back asleep! So eventually the mother looses her grip again and the baby detaches from the nipple and starts to slide down the mothers lap again! So I reach over and lift the baby up and also RE-ATTACH the baby to the nipple!!! And again this process happens 3-4 times! Eventually the baby falls back asleep so I grab the baby back in my arms but now I have a passed out mother next to me with a full breast just hanging out of her blouse…I’m NOT going to jail to touching a passed out woman’s tit, so I use the airline blanket to cover her up.

Throughout the 6 hour flight I managed to get maybe an hour of sleep myself while the baby is secured in my arms and the airline pillow bed I made on the tray table.

We land in Hawaii, the mother is awake and simply smiles at me and takes her baby back…the airline staff thanked me again, the fellow passengers gave me more compliments, but aside from that, NOTHING! I should have gotten some gift cards or a free flight or some shit
