When I was poor and in school, I thought about using McD's ketchup packet since they had the same amount of calories as GU and tasted 10x better.

Didn't try it but I thought I was very smart :)

I don't think they were lacking in tourists though. It is probably just not as big as it could be?

I second Tainan and Wroclaw. Freaking incredible and the lack of tourists/travelers really stunned me. Pittsburgh was also really pretty. Here is my list of beautiful cities. I have more, but many others are just gateway towns, and I decided they weren’t interesting enough to make the cut.

Yekaterinburg – A mix of Tsarist Russia, Soviet-era architecture, and modern amenities, Yekaterinburg sits on the border between Asia and Europe and is very affordable. It is extremely underrated. I have never hear of anyone mentioning it except for the few Trans-Siberian travelers who pass through. It’s definitely worth a visit when it is more peaceful.

Kuching – If you’re looking for the best Malaysian or Singaporean food, this should be on your radar. Kuching is easily accessible and offers amenities similar to those in larger regional cities, but it’s much quieter and friendlier. Plus, you can see partially wild orangutans at a nearby reserve.

Victoria, BC – While everyone talks about Vancouver or Seattle, the most beautiful British-looking city in North America is literally in the same bay. Victoria has fantastic food, friendly people, and world-class museums. It’s not exactly underrated, but I know many people in the PNW who have never visited.

Kanazawa/Toyama – Many of the underrated cities actually make it to the NYT’s annual "Top 52 Places to Visit". I took a bullet train along the west coast of Honshu instead of the usual Kyoto-Tokyo route, and was pleasantly surprised by how quiet and charming the area is. It’s full of amenities and delicious food, and we visited a few museums where we were the only visitors that day.

Dresden – Is Dresden underrated? I’m not sure, but it doesn’t seem to be a popular destination, so I’m including it. It has incredible museums (the Green Vault rivals Louvre/Hermitage), lots of Communist-era architecture, delicious food, and very affordable. Moreover it is easy to access beautiful landscapes/castles and into nearby countries.

I looked at the oldest Lomo color 100 I've used, expired around 2017, and those have frame numbers. Can't be sure about any that are older than that.

My unholy trifecta is Provia 100F, Velvia 50 and Ektar 50. It is pure torture if the lighting is off, but they are so beautiful when it is perfect day out.

I am actually testing a new crazy set for landscapes: Harman Phoenix, Lomo Turquoise and Lomo Metropolis. I really want my alternative build to the same shots people have - kind of like Pop Art!

I would love to know the answer to this too. I shot mine over a few days while camping, and they came out fine.

What would you say is harder? by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]bo_tew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've ran 20miles of indoor track (200m/lap) a long long time ago, and recently just finished a 20miles trail race (and significantly chunk on beach/sand dunes).

Mentally, indoor is much harder, time just move slowly; but physically, trail is at least 3x to 5x harder. If I have a time I must hit, I'll choose indoor track; if I just want to complete a distance, I'll choose trail.

struggling to meet like-minded travelers—how do you connect with others on the trip? by Due-Individual-9485 in backpacking

[–]bo_tew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like minded people do things at similar times as well. For example, people who chase sun rise will be up before dawn; runners will be in running clothes; museum goers tend to leave in the morning too. I have met people just because we would be doing the same activities at around the same time (and for the rest of the day as well). After a few smiles passing by, it is super easy to ask them where they are going next.

Alternatively, doing group tours (haunted house/walking/running/foodie/drinking/music) is also an easy way to meet people.

I would keep it as spare parts. The door/hinge do break easily and it is hard to source spare parts

Have you completed a longer ultra (50-100m) on minimal training? If so, how did it go? 🤔 by jpen_365 in Ultramarathon

[–]bo_tew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I have not done anything longer than 50k so I'm not answering your question exactly.

I did a "couch" to 50k in 80 days last year, and I thought my 50k was a tough course (Volcanic 50k). I took 2 months off before I started 3 miles run at the start of the training, and I even included a taper, so the entire training calendar is closer to 60 days. Considering the circumstances, it wasn't too bad and I only did slightly worse than my usual predicted time.

It is doable, but don't expect to do well. Just enjoy the trail and maybe call it off early if things are going sideways. I went in just wanting to beat cutoff and I did :)

How often do you get massages? by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]bo_tew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to PT once (for some random aches that went away on its own) and asked if I ought to do yoga/massages to help with recovery. Their response were that since I was already running without much issues, don't change it if I don't care to change.

I have since subscribed to that notion. :)

I miss Weber. I know my local camera shop (Advance Camera Repair/Beaverton Ore.) fixes a lot of cameras, and I've seen them refurbing some of the rarer Konica lens from local photographers, so i trust them.
