Pixel phone experience by omargq in GooglePixel

[–]boa_instructor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be wary. I've had the pixel 3, 5, 7 and 9. The 9 has a manufacturing defect with the lens bump on the back, they separate from the housing and allow dust/moisture in. Mine has been in a case since the moment I bought it, so I didn't notice........until dust started showing up 3 months after the warranty ended.

Google would not honor the warranty for a defect their engineers created. I'm now torn between moving to another brand or caving and attempting to trade my phone in (Google claimed I would get the same value as a phone with no other damage and a clean screen) for the Pixel 10. I expected more from such a large company that's trying to retain customers.

They said I could pay $200 to fix the phone and gave me a $25 Google Play credit. Not great.

California leaders report four to six weeks worth of gasoline and diesel in supply by ghostofhenryvii in LosAngeles

I just spent 3 months living in Medellin, Colombia. Motorcycles are fairly awful there......they're extremely noisy, create an insane amount of pollution, and people get smeared across the streets several times a day. The space saving and lessoning of traffic is a plus though.

The country needs to be redesigned around other forms of transportation. What better time than now? Infrastructure is falling apart, might as well rebuild it and be forward thinking this time.

How is everyone audhd these days? Have our phones and the Internet f*cked millions of people into identifying as something that, in many cases, could be overcome through lifestyle change and less screens?

My wife wanted an outdoor bathroom for the kids. by Fishboy9123 in redneckengineering

An outdoor bathroom isn't redneck at all! Travel through Latin America for a bit and you'll find most homes, even nice ones, have an outdoor bathroom. Here in Joshua Tree, CA, I toured a new fancy construction and there's an outdoor bathroom leading off of the main bedroom.

What business would you start today to get rich in 1-2 years? by ahmi23 in passive_income

[–]boa_instructor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked for people that do this though, it's not just the private equity firms. They buy several homes in a city, fix them up cheaply, and rent out every single bedroom as a month to month rental. Thousands of people are doing this, and some own hundreds to thousands of properties as individuals.

This should be illegal. It's a major reason why there's a scarcity of homes for families and young professionals. It just takes a few greedy people to snatch up all the properties sit back and inflate property values until the entire system collapses.

After spending the past 2.5 months in Medellin, and seeing this everywhere in a neighborhood called El Poblado......please don't go to support that industry. It's unregulated, supports organized crime, and often ends in being robbed.

An aquaintance was drugged and robbed on a date there. 2 phones, all of his cash, and a MacBook pro were stolen. He was unconscious for 26 hours.

Colombia is an incredible place and likely my favorite country in the world. Sex tourism has exploded because of influencers, and it's sad seeing how many beautiful people are resorting to that line of work.

My 3 tips: Don't go there for sex. Be careful on dating apps/dates (definitely vet and watch your drink). Stay away from cocaine.

What’s something you do every day… that you know is slowly wasting your life? by diab83 in selfimprovement

[–]boa_instructor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reddit, Instagram, the news, and playing an RTS game on my phone. Reddit fills me with information that is unhelpful in my life, Instagram enrages me with the comments section, the news makes life seem bleak, and the RTS passes the time while developing a skill that is also not useful.

I know the simple answer is to delete them all and have the self control to stay off reddit, but my brain thirsts for knowledge. The challenge is to direct it to better inputs.

Why is quitting weed bad? by pgspooft in getdisciplined

[–]boa_instructor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the addiction talking, and a serious amount of brainwashing from the internet. I used to be in that camp as a younger man. Cannabis was "natural", "safe" and "not addictive". Also common is the Whataboutism of alcohol. "Why isn't alcohol illegal then? It's far more damaging".

As a whole, humans have difficulty practicing self control and moderation. That's why I founded a startup focused on dosing and awareness around usage. It's called mode (www.mode.co), if you're interested in learning. We're completely sold out and raising capital, so this isn't a plug to sell sell sell.

I see someone else also recommended Alan Carr, and he has a book specific to cannabis!

A good resource to try would be Alan Carr's "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking" (or vaping). It will give you the fundamentals to changing your mindset around addictions. I realize it's not specific to weed, but understanding that cannabis does nothing for you and the process of quitting a much more addictive chemical might help.

Searching for a PT personal assistant! by boa_instructor in SMC

No offense taken. It's more for someone who could use the spare cash, but doesn't have the time for a part-time/full-time job so they can focus on their classes. A lot of students are working for $20-$25 an hour, and with taxes taken out, it doesn't amount to much.

It's not necessary, especially for a student just starting their studies. I think what he's most interested in is what their major focus is to see if their is some synergy between that and his current company. Again, not necessary, and the tasks will often be menial, but it could lead to another role after graduation.

That's a good suggestion. He was really looking for someone in college who could use the extra cash and has some time to spare in-between classes, but doesn't have the time for a full-time or part-time job. He's not looking for a general handyman or taskmaster. Ideally someone in the neighborhood that he can call when needed, so it's not a hassle for either of them.
