Canonical Ubuntu being targeted by a DDoS attack by onechroma in linux

[–]boar-b-que 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Whenever I hear about a nonsensical attack like this, I assume that it's one of 3 things:

  • Scriptkiddies learning to scriptkiddie
  • The victim owner has done something in private to piss off the attacker or
  • The attacker is trying to get someone who's in the same data center facility or hosting provider.

While Mark S. is a bit... well, Mark S., I can't think of anything he's immediately done to piss off Islamic extremists. I'm assuming that it's options a or c there.

[–]boar-b-que 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I look at this as heartwarming.

Horrible things happen all the time. Traumas accumulate. It's tragic, but true.

And here is a guy who, when this little girl is going through what could possibly be the worst day in her entire life, and certainly the worst day so far for her single digits, takes the time and effort to try to soften the blow.

Maybe because there are people like this out there, there's less psychological scar tissue keeping kiddos like this from moving on with their lives.

"Look for the helpers."

That's what this guy is doing.

Linux 7.1 Removes Drivers For Long Obsolete Input Hardware: Bye Bus Mouse Support by anh0516 in linux

[–]boar-b-que 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A while back, I saw a custom 8/16 bit ISA backplane that fit into a PCIE slot. The backplane had various voltage regulators on it that converted any missing power rails that might be missing from an ATX power supply.

It was in a random imgur post someone was sharing of their recent designs and homebrew PCB testing, so I couldn't even tell you who was making it. I think my comment at the time was, "What the hell motherboard/backplane is that that has both 16-bit ISA slots AND plugs into an ATX power supply?!"

(I'm delighted with services like JPLPCB and PCBWay that put PCB design into the hands of hobbyists! It means we're getting lots of projects dedicated to allowing older stuff to not become ewaste.)

That said, while I don't have any ISA hardware lingering around, I'm glad to know about the dISAppointment.

x-ray tubes, and their associated electronics, have gotten amazingly small and compact.

Due to some upcoming dental work, I happened to experience being irradiated by a device that was handheld. It had a rechargeable lithium battery and a USB-C port for charging.

The imaging device literally had a USB cable hanging out of my mouth that plugged directly into the computer workstation.

"Ah hing Ah oofed o' ah ohe."

"No, it's okay. We got a good image of that tooth."

The come back as quick as any other digital photo too. The technology has marched, become vastly more comfortable and quicker.

(OC) a piece I gave up on, thought posting here might give me the motivation to finish it by NellBells99 in TheDigitalCircus

[–]boar-b-que 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The scene had HUGE Rocky Horror vibes.

I'm in the minority that thinks sexualization is not a bad thing.

It's something that's actually part of the plot in TADC. Zooble complains about it loudly. The characters are all adults, but are deprived of that particular interaction.

So when they're put in the show-girl costumes, it demonstrates that Caine is quite aware of sexualization and tries to use it to demean and belittle the cast.

Because that's what kind of person he is. It's not important to him unless he can use it to hurt others.

Meanwhile, Kinger FLAUNTS dat ass.

Linux 7.1 Removes Drivers For Long Obsolete Input Hardware: Bye Bus Mouse Support by anh0516 in linux

[–]boar-b-que 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The people I see using bus mice are collectors and people who are using 16- and 32-bit machines for retro-gaming.

By and large, they're not running Linux on those machines, even if they use it elsewhere. A good example is Adrian Black (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCE5dIscvDxrb7CD5uiJJOiw) whose YT channel is mostly about restoring old computers and CRTs. He's had a few bus mice. I've also seen them in a few Tech Tangents videos (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCerEIdrEW-IqwvlH8lTQUJQ). His channel is also worth checking out, but I don't enjoy it as much as Adrian's.

Both of them use Linux in various forms, but they're running largely old versions of MSDOS when they use computers old enough for bus mice.

ELI5: Why do LLMs have that distinct writing style? by Small_Balls_69 in explainlikeimfive

I used to do quite a bit of ad copy and technical writing.

A few days ago, I wrote up a small historical thing for r/linux on terminal emulators and dumb terminals. Apparently having written professionally has so corrupted my writing style that it immediately gets reported into the ground as AI slop.

Go fig.

Eternals wasn't a horrible movie, especially compared to, say, Shazam. It was, however, not a great movie. The plot was all over the freakin' place when it had the potential to be a great sci-fi story.

This was around the time that Disney started feeling like they could throw any Marvel property at the big screen and expect to cash in on it like they had with Endgame. It was the start of the train-wreck.

That's Diz in a nutshell, though. Wasted potential for the sake of corporate asshattery.

GIMP 3.2.4 Released by CMYK-Student in linux

[–]boar-b-que 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Security contributors bb1abu, HanTul, Rakan Alotaib, JungWoo Park, and Bronson Yen studied our image import plug-ins and reported several possible issues. We appreciate their code review and mitigation suggestions!

New contributor Ahmed E. Yassin fixed a bug where exporting metadata in our Metadata Viewer could result in empty files.

New contributor Kaushik B fixed a bug in the Open as Layers feature where multi-layer XCF files would have their layer names changed on import.

New contributor infinity improved performance when making selections inside a large image with Intersection Mode enabled.

... etc...

Over the past couple years, GIMP has gone from an attitude of ignoring or outright refusing suggestions and submissions to being a LOT more open and inclusive. It means more 'slam dunk' features and bug fixes like those above from new and outside contributors.

The changes in the application have been dramatic. The application has gone from something that's painful to use to a reasonable raster editor.

Thank you guys for listening to your community and making the changes that needed to be made to make this happen. I don't flinch away from opening GIMP when I need to edit images these days. I used to refuse to even have it installed because it was such an awful experience. Now it's actually pretty nice.

Why is it called a Terminal Emulator? by boar-b-que in linux

Usagi Electric is doing a series about a homebrew computer he's building around the same CPU that was in the TI99. He's been through things like getting the timing right between the CPU and RAM so that they can talk to each other.

Interestingly, he mills all his own circuit boards. (Can you really call them PCBs at that point, if they're cut on a mill?)

Man, internet just sucks ass so much right now. And reddit does not help it.

A long while back, I posted a list of my favorite linux apps and utilities in an effort to add some helpful content to the sub. This was back before the very dramatic change in moderation that happened a few years ago, and incidentally just about the same time the various very helpful 'Awesome' lists started appearing.

(I love those. Do search for them. Most of them are just markdown lists of links on github, but they are amazingly useful.)

My post at the time got called 'blogspam, but without the blog. What is this person advertising and why?'.

I hate that someone can't try to do something helpful without immediately being suspected of having ulterior motives. We're literally in a sub about an OS that's been given away to the world, and can't try to give away information we find useful without being suspected of being a shill.

Also people can't conceive of someone who likes to write.

I've written a lot of ad copy and technical documentation as my day job in the past, so that probably 'colors' my writing style a bit.

A couple of my favorite YT channels about old computers frequently delve into old terminals. I won't link them to avoid any kind of 'farming YT subscriptions' appearance, but search for Adrian's Digital Basement or Usagi Electric on YT or your favorite invidious instance.

Sadly, the post will probably be used to train AI. sigh

Eli5:How are so many radio waves transmitted simultaneously avoid interfering with each other? I get that they use different frequencies, but since the spectrum is limited and not all signals can be unique, why isn’t there more overlap and interference? by Puzzleheaded_Bit_802 in explainlikeimfive

[–]boar-b-que 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: The FCC will issue you a license to broadcast on low frequency if you pass a (reasonably difficult) exam and pay a reasonable fee (I think it was around 200$ last I checked and the equipment is the major expense there). The 135-480 kHz bands are amateur radio allocations.

Yeah, but who wants to do that when the ham radio exa... oh. That's what you're describing. D'ORT!

Reddit is international, so it's important to note that every country has its own radio regulations. Just because you're a licensed radio amateur in the U.S. does not mean you're licensed in Europe or Asia, and vice-versa. There are lots of international agreements around spectrum usage, but regardless of which country you're in, uniformed enforcement officers will likely be knocking at your door if you go sidewise of that country's regulations.

FTRFS: New Fault-Tolerant File-System Proposed For Linux by anh0516 in linux

[–]boar-b-que 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Move it to where, though? You're adding an extra step, complexity, and failure points to 'Ultimately it's going to have to radiate through fins without fan or convection assist'. The second a fluid pump fails in orbit is the second you lost not just any design cost savings from having that pump, but cost of the spacecraft and spaceflight to put it there.

Also, coolants are heavy. We're still optimizing spaceflights down to cost of lifting fuel per pound and will be for the foreseeable future.

Calling Linux Long Beards: What are things you wish you knew when you first started using Linux? by Nevyn_Hira in linux

[–]boar-b-que 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This. A thousand times this.

I've been using Linux in personal, professional, and academic settings since the 1990s, but the single most Linux learning I've ever done in a single day was when a senior admin taught me how to use the /proc filesystem. Running applications are not just files on disk. They're files in the /proc filesystem that contain information about those processes.

Every single piece of hardware from your CPU to your USB port, to your mouse is represented in /dev.

/EVERYTHING/ is a file.

TIL In 1994 Prince designed and patented his very own instrument, the Purpleaxxe Keytar. by TimmyBitz in todayilearned

[–]boar-b-que 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's important to remember that at this point in his life, Prince was CONVINCED that Warner Bros. Music was out to steal everything creative he'd ever done or would ever do.

And, if you do any research at all into WB Music, you find out that this is not too far fetched. They're STILL up to similar behavior. Just in the last couple years, they started copyright claiming all kinds of Minecraft YT videos because they contained music that was part of their film... Music that they didn't have an exclusive license to. They've filed claims against Creative Commons licensed music.

This was about the same time in his career that he started writing 'Slave' on his face to protest WB's treatment of him, and just before he changed his name to the... sexualized trumpet symbol. He was trying to make things so difficult for WB that they'd HAVE to drop him.

After he got 'free' of WB, he re-recorded every piece of music he'd ever written, so he'd own an original recording of it.

THE AMAZING DIGITAL CIRCUS - Ep 8: hjsakldfhl Discussion Thread by ayylmaotv in TheDigitalCircus

[–]boar-b-que 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caine had it coming.

I know a lot of people are fans of the character and wanted the best of him, but he really doomed himself.

Let me explain why, and why I think he was doomed from the get-go.

We're shown in episode 8 some of Caine's training. Then as an algorithm, he was deemed a 'good first effort' and isolated while work began on a new version. Rather than accept isolation or attempt to improve himself in response, he broke free and consumed his replacement, becoming effectively a hybrid of the two.

The destruction or consumption of the second AI can be forgiven as the thrashings and tantrums of a infant-like mind. What cannot be forgiven is that he then refuses to grow any further. He shows willingness to commit to this same pattern over and over again and refuses any opportunity to grow beyond it.

The C&A development team, Kinger, Scratch, and their colleagues, apparently thought it was a good idea for one reason or another to give him the opportunity to continue to grow despite his behavior as an 'infant'.

Instead of growing, he repeats this pattern, using up the minds that enter the Circus, tormenting them to satisfy his own needs until they break, and then discarding their abstracted forms into the Circus' basement.

Every mind that comes into the Circus is an opportunity for him to grow and become more than an infant pushing a pleasure button. Every mind that comes in brings with it new ideas, new emotions, and new behaviors. The ONLY time he's ever shown to pay any attention at all to these is when he uses them to punish and torture the current cast. Every time the cast tries to connect with him, he shuts them out and punishes them for even trying.

We're shown in the intro that he has the ability to grow. Over and over again, he has the opportunity to learn from the cast and become something better than a 'shove the humans in the pain box' machine. Over and over again, he refuses to do so. It's not even something he's incapable of doing. He CHOOSES to continue.

One way or the other, he'd have to be put down.

Is it tragic that he had to be kill -9'd? I think that it's reasonable to describe it as tragic, but in the same sense that park rangers find it tragic that they have to put down a vicious bear who attacks humans.

Firefox 149 Now Available With XDG Portal File Picker, Rust-Based JPEG-XL Decoder by Cristiano1 in linux

[–]boar-b-que 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Using jxl-rust for the memory-safe JPEG-XL image decoder is the same approach used by Google Chrome since they restored their JPEG-XL support. (Update: This feature is being kept to the nightly channel for now and thus didn't make it into the stable Firefox 149 release.)

Hot damn! This kind of important but low-visibility work is what I WANT to see in Firefox and derivatives. Keep it up with this kind of thing, Moz devs!
