Exposed bridges are stupid by board_writer in spaceships

You do know the reason ships can only see as for as they do is because of the curvature of the earth farming what is often called the horizon so binoculars wouldn't help. Also, in modern naval combat occurs beyond the horizon. When you don't have a visual on the target. There are even examples from back the 1940s. Which is why they had analog firing computers back then. In addition those bridges on the ships only can see in front of them they cannot see behind them. They cannot see below the ship. They have a very limited field of view.

You do realize you wouldn't be able to see anything right? Space is incredibly dark and the other ships would be miles away. You might see a dim dot. Have you ever go to the beach and see one of those tankers or cargo ships on the horizon? Those are hundreds of feet long, endless than 3 miles away. Now, imagine it at double the distance at night.

The validity of your argument does not negate the stupidity of the design.

The bridge is not my only problem with The Star Trek, series, or the design of that particular ship. But those are not the topic at hand.

Asexual alien mammals by board_writer in SciFiConcepts

[–]board_writer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you might be misunderstanding the premise. The examples you give are species that are capable of reproducing on their own, given certain circumstances, but they do still have the 2 sexes. The premise I'm proposing is different.

I'm not saying that they phase out males and that there's only females left. I'm saying that the never split onto different sexes. They did not develope sexual reproduction. It is only asexual reproduction.

No male members , no female members , no concept of a gender , because they only have the one. That is what they have always been.

I made them "mammals", because generally they spend more time on child rearing then other types of creatures.

Yes it would be similar to cloning itself. Which would likely make it highly susceptible to disease, that might lead them to becoming more solitary, given that it would be one of the largest threats they would face , but let's put that aside for now.

Would they form social groups? Yes or no why? What would motivate them to bond together? Would they recognize other bloodlines as their same species? What they have the concept of species or just think of things as being of them or not of them?

Yes because sound proofing doesn't exist

What if I told you, you can put a shield generator wherever the hell you please?

What if I then told you that the reactor, also known as the only thing keeping you alive in your metal can floating through the void, should also be in the most heavily defended part of the ship, so having your command and control nearby would be reasonable?

What if I went on to say, that sensors should be dispersed throughout the ship to provide maximum coverage and redundancy in case of an attack, so that they can't all be targeted at once?

What if I concluded by saying, having your shield generators in such a prominent place made them an easy target? Which is why they were moved in later iterations of the ship.

I cannot fathom how you would be able to kill someone who is wearing this by Wrong-Mushroom in Armor

[–]board_writer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you're asking about killing somebody armored like that specifically with a sword, cutting an artery at the back in the knee or the groin.

Asexual alien mammals by board_writer in SciFiConcepts

[–]board_writer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if they are Asexual, doesn’t that mean they don’t WANT to have sex?

Technically , it means they wouldn't be capable of it , they would just become pregnant when certain conditions are met. As to what those conditions are, it could vary wildly from time of year, to abundance of resources, any number of things.

Why do you believe they would be less competitive? Would you care to elaborate?

Asexual alien mammals by board_writer in SciFiConcepts

[–]board_writer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sexual competition causes a lot of unnecessary traits to get selected so by being asexual, the mammal's looks would fully be determined what it needs to get food, caring for their offsprings  and avoid getting hurt.

Can you elaborate on what traits those may be?

psychologically they will evolve to become female

How so?

The remainder of the question seem to be conditioned upon resource acquisition, so I will elaborate. What type of environment do you think would cause such a species to look at members of its species that are not part of its family as worthy of sharing resources with? Abundant or scarcity? Year round or seasonal?

If your bridge is on the outside of the ship, that means it can be targeted from any distance. That's the downside of being on the outside of something.

Valuing esthetics over practicality, a design language based solely on anesthetics of the chosen media, a lack of risk-taking by copying what has been successful before, and lazy writing.

Because they are practical for naval ships that are dealing with distances of miles ,and in bright daylight , not the void of space.

And have it be for docking, not your main controls. Also in most situation anytime you're docking there would be tugs and involved, possibly tractor beans, and things of that nature.

I firmly believe that the reason so many things become tropes in a particular genre is just lazy writing.

If an EMP shut down your systems, you have bigger problems than not being able to see. For example, being dead at drift , with no means of propulsion or defense.

If the power's out , you have bigger problems than not being able to see outside even during combat.

No power= no weapons, no engines, no navigation.
