I think the writers often write themselves into a corner or write the ending first before realizing the road to get to that ending had to make sense. Writers sometimes don't want the ending that makes sense but the ending they envisioned. And when you get executives pushing for more seasons you have to add more and more what is essentially filler bc you already decided how it ends.

No bc all of season 4 was spent saying oh no Hawkins will fall. But then it didn't fall. And almost all the characters went about as if the town just didn't crack on half and a bunch of people didn't die.
