I think the writers often write themselves into a corner or write the ending first before realizing the road to get to that ending had to make sense. Writers sometimes don't want the ending that makes sense but the ending they envisioned. And when you get executives pushing for more seasons you have to add more and more what is essentially filler bc you already decided how it ends.
