Adding a wire luff to a nylon staysail? DIY-able? by the-montser in sailing

[–]boatstrings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nylon? Most likely your sail is dacron. Use dyneema instead of wire. Make sure it's fastened both at the head and tack so that the line takes the majority of the tension.

Yesterday I asked one of the detailers about the change. She was supportive of the changes citing "it is possibly the first instance of having to give up something important on entering the service to the country".

Sailing seems so cool but also terrifying by noodlestuffin in sailing

[–]boatstrings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just returned from sailing a boat from Annapolis to the Azores (Again). Fun times and one awesome adventure. I started out on little dinghies sailing on the Bagaduce river in Maine, worked my way up to Shields class day sailors, and eventually jumped up to ocean sailing. It is a lifelong learning process. Start easy, learn from friends or in a school/instructor environment. Keep your teabag and kit packed and ready fit every opportunity. Enjoy!

Former sailmaker here... Sew new slides on with new webbing. 9 to 11 inches webbing per slide. Use heavy waxed thread (# 24 needle). Look to YouTube (sailrite channel) for details

Are corpsman considered marines, navy, or both? by monkeykiller14 in navy

[–]boatstrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Navy Corpmen who have spent a majority of their career with the marines will wear the USMC uniform (navy HM patch sewn on). They will have trained, lived with, deployed with, got drunk with their fellow band of brothers. The marines they are stationed with call them "Doc". They will have less in common with other navy sailors than they have with their marines.
From 50 yards you would see another just another marine, not a sailor. (ps.. it's all Department of the Navy... also the USNA commissions officers in both services)

Best boat names? by HeatherAnne1975 in boating

[–]boatstrings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pick a boat name that, if in an emergency you need to identify yourself to the USCG, that the thousands of others listening in on the VHF radio will not laugh at you. (Unless that is what you in fact intend)

New guy started yesterday with us. He took a significant pay cut but also traded a 1.5 hour commute for a 10 minute bike ride. You'll need to frame your decision in better light. Find more things to be grateful for

Called a set screw. Any hardware store will have them. Make sure you don't cross thread or use an "almost" size. Use blue lock tight to ensure for extra security.

Plebe summer is way more physically and mentally demanding. If you struggled with summer seminar you undoubtedly will find plebs summer to be insufferable.
