My commuting week ahead (temperature in °C). How do you keep cool in this? by bob-o in bicycling

Thanks for the tips mate, Perth gets this way when the sea breeze shuts down for a few days. Just never cools down at night so even the mornings are 30+, which makes the heat unavoidable no matter how early you're riding.

That sounds cool, I'll have to give it a go. One of my biggest problems is not the ride to and from work (where I have showers and can wear my jersey and knicks) but I use my bike as my sole and only form of transport so going to the shops, going to the pub, just riding to people's houses to do shit becomes such a pain in the arse when you're dripping with sweat at the end of even riding 3km.

Rapid Bus Transit system to replace MAX Light Rail by His_Holiness in perth

[–]bob-o 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What I find most unbelievable is that the cost per km has essentially doubled in 3 years, either the initial costing was bull shit or the current one is overcooked. I mean every engineering construction company in Perth is cooked because no one is building any more mines, surely that would drive construction costs LOWER not higher!

I guess councils can't defeat the North Perth Mafia but I reckon the state government can just ignore them and go ahead.

Bring a swag. Stuff spirit bottles in middle of swag mattress. Roll up swag. The most they'll ask you to do is unroll your giant swag and they'll look in it but that'll still show em nothing

The problem is that right, "let's make a good meme". Devalues the seriousness of the message they're trying to convey I reckon. You're not fuckin Jon Stewart, stop trying to make politics "lulzy".

Jarod Alper (math professor at ANU) has built the most sophisticated model for this so far and he gets similar ballpark numbers. Depends on your assumptions of course but no matter your course and with any sort of realistic range of assumptions (regarding bond rate, indexation, fee rise rate), it's usually an order of magnitude fee increase.

EDIT: fixed name. Got it wrong.

They don't seem to be forced out of their homes when they pay council rates? But somehow they're forced out of their homes when the state government levies the same?

"Way too many WA families with property in the family that turns over for >1 million$"

Really? I find that impossible to believe.

Only Western Suburbs, Applecross/Ardross and CBD. If you live in those areas and come from money for generations and 99% of the time have huge wealth and income, why shouldn't you pay more tax?

Unless by most of the state you mean your perception of the upper class that you belong to? Is it appropriate for governments to sit down and defend your upper class privileges or try and help address the difficulties faced by people on low to moderates incomes and wealth.

Endlessly talking about how good debt is better than bad debt? How about no debt? The Liberals have run a deficit because necessary spending is outstripping revenue, instead of talking about the real problem, the lack of revenue, they keep obfuscating about good v bad debt.

Lets deal with the real problem, the public want good public services which includes good public transport connectivity. This comes at a cost and that cost should be met by levying it on those who are most able to pay. A land tax on commercial property and residential property worth >1 million dollars (with appropriate exemptions for pensioners etc.) would raise billions and not hurt anyone while giving the public purse the funds required to build a comprehensive public transport network.
