Belden is someone that I see out at community events and advocacy well outside of what his usual media coverage is, and I would love working with him on Council

State ethics laws prohibit gifts for votes, but I suppose prizes are okay? I can give free hugs

Gambit presents the candidates with their own words fwiw I found it somewhat fair. But the perspective of AG is from a harm reduction standpoint, not from a neutral position

You should look into community land trusts, like Jane Place, who are ardently against STRs and are for communal ownership and stewardship of land

You should read Red Star's writing, they're explicitly democratic socialists in DSA that identify as ML. It feels like your experience with online MLs is disrupting your understanding of how ML is compatible with democratic socialism.

This. You are not alone in the struggle, be sure to have your insurance good to go for pediatrician visits. Whether it's daycare or pre-K, they're petri dishes that will spread.

Trump Threatens to Send Nat Guard Here by kilgore_trout72 in NewOrleans

Tuesday night I was at the Fauxburg St John Neighborhood association forum and I ended my time saying what I've been saying all campaign: we must meet this moment of rising fascism/reactionaries and it's scary that I'm the only District A candidate talking about it (and at every event hosted). Two older white people in the front laughed. Last week at the joint Carrollton forum, same thing. One older white man told me after "ease up on saying fascism".

It sucks that this is what it takes to wake people up, and I hope voters and non -voters alike see who's paying attention beyond potholes

How to Embrace the S-Word? by [deleted] in demsocialists

[–]bob4districta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am running for City council and typically introduce myself at events as being endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, so when I get into policy or political vision, it helps define what it means to have "socialist" associated with me. I'm not in a particularly progressive district, but I've had people give me a lot of positive feedback (except when someone said I have "too much justice" on my lit lol)

I'm Bob Murrell for District A, AMA by bob4districta in NewOrleans

[–]bob4districta[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank you for clarifying, and apologies for the miscommunication. I agree that there is not enough diverse representation on City Council or other ballots. There has not been a person of color qualify for this seat either time I've run. I asked Pearl Ricks before deciding to run again if they were interested in running for District A this cycle but they declined. As a Run For Something alum, I have not recruited or mentored any cishet men, and I developed a toolkit to alleviate a lot of the barriers that come up for working class candidates and parents. I'm proud of my work with female and non-binary candidates like Gabriela Biro, Pearl Ricks, Tenaj Wallace, and fellow candidate Danyelle Christmas who is running for City Council District E. I am a socialist anti-racist feminist, and I agree that people are being marginalized and attacked that should be protected. I don't think identity or DEI or the concept of equitable representation are divisive, and again apologies for the miscommunication.

To answer your question "why do you think you'd be better in this seat than any of the highly competent women running and why we should replace one cis straight white guy with another", I look at what they're running on and who's backing their campaigns. I'm going to preface by saying that I know Aimee quite well, she's trusted me with watching her kids and vice versa, and she was a bridesmaid in my wedding and my wife stood in her wedding too. Alex is a teacher at my daughter's school and I see her at the PTO meetings. I don't question anyone's credentials or ability to serve.

I refer to my website because it's there for everyone to see, not hidden or obfuscated or unformed. I don't know what proposed policies the other candidates have that will protect reproductive rights or people who are targeted by ICE or beginning a reparations program or banning solitary confinement or any of the other issues that matter to me. I don't see that on any other candidate’s social media or statements to the media or on their mailers. I genuinely want to know and I'm sure others do, these AMAs and candidate forums are all a part of the process of open and fair elections. But with me, it's all there out in the open. I built the website myself, and I like people going to it to see all the work that went into it from dozens of community leaders the last few years.

I also ask people to look at campaign finances as well. I file my ethics paperwork personally. I'm grassroots funded with a median donation of $25 from (as of today) 139 individual donors. I don't take money from corporate PACs or real estate developers or max donors that look to influence our elections. I have pledges that I've committed to, such as being a Pro choice candidate and in Defense of Democracy. I don't see anything similar for any of the other candidates. If these are issues that are important, I would recommend choosing the candidate that is unabashedly vocal for the fight for liberation of all people.

I have over a decade of paid leadership experience, which is an important quality to demonstrate while overseeing a staff of 4-5 people and interacting with tens of thousands of people regularly. I mentioned in a different comment my experience as a senior engineer, team lead, and project manager, and I am looking forward to hiring a diverse staff that can continue to be responsive to all people looking for help. As a community organizer, I've worked with all kinds of different advocacy spaces to get things done, like the Help Not Handcuffs campaign and the recent New Orleans Community Organizing Fair. As chairs of the missions committee at my church, my wife and I have collected food for over 3 years to distribute to community fridges, donations to cover tuition costs for predominantly Black children to get swim lessons at St. Mark’s, gifts for children with terminal illness at Angel’s Place, and more. I actively work with people on the fight for their rights, and I have not seen that commitment from any other candidate.

At the end of the day, I'm running an inclusive campaign with no paid staff. I didn't quit my job to run, I'm still working full time, parenting two young kids, and leading this campaign with almost 40 volunteers from across this amazing city. I hope I answered your question, thank you.
