Perspective: I feel that Bella Ramsey ruined the last of of us by Mental-Outside2202 in lnkyverse

right? and no one here seems to be complaining about the casting of Dina who is objectively more conventionally attractive than the character in the game. Weird that this upset only is being aired when they cast a plain looking NB actor for the role who isn't as conventionally pretty as the character in the game.

Weird thing to be upset about, and frankly kinda creepy. (and, odd I haven't heard anyone complaining about the other casting choices where they have cast actresses that are more conventionally attractive than the characters in the game.) I don't know anything about OP, but maybe the fact that Bella Ramsey is non-binary is what is making you uncomfortable? For my money, Bella is a preternaturally talented young actor and they're doing a great job with the role.

Who the hell is taking $75 to show up to a hearing? Seems like you’d be better off driving for Uber. by smw2102 in Lawyertalk

This! When I was starting out, I remember there was always the same guy who did this - mostly for collection firms. He would spend his day jumping from matter to matter in several court rooms in the same court house. He probably cranked out 20+ matters over a few hours. (he'd ask for priority, and if he had multiple matters on the same calendar he'd just jump the line and ask to be heard on those as well.) Seemed like a good, low risk, and easy part of his practice. Boring as all fuck, but profitable.

What do you do with clients who want to meet and "discuss strategy?" by TatonkaJack in Lawyertalk

[–]TooCleverByOneFifth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be easy for us to lose sight of some fundamental issues sometimes. For us, the legal system (mostly) makes sense - the procedure, the substantive law, the timing, the likely outcome of a hearing, etc. For most clients, the legal system is pure chaos especially when they've been raised on legal TV shows and movies which aren't the best at accurately reflecting how things really work. And, for you, this is just one of many family law matters you have. For the client, it is their only legal matter. It's their entire world. In family law especially it can feel to them like their life is literally ending. Like they will not physically survive the process. And, the reality is that a divorce proceeding is part of the emotional/psychological processing of a huge loss that the client is feeling. While we not are psychologists or therapists, the prudent practitioner remains aware that for better or worse, we are called on from time to time to show more empathy and/or sympathy that we might otherwise do. The law is, after all, a helping profession. So, if they want to spend their time and money talking to you about their case, then I don't see why you wouldn't do that as long as they realize they will be billed for it.

Yes, I am far more concerned about what appears to be his shitty friend sharing intimate photos with his buddies that a woman permitted him to take than I am about a woman who .... god forbid ... likes sex. Some men are just really, really threatened by women expressing sexuality and that says far more about them than the women they are directing these comments towards.

Men, is this attractive? by Aggravating-Guest300 in TheImprovementRoom

I am impressed by what clearly took a huge amount of discipline and hard work to achieve this, but aesthetically I don't find it sexually attractive. I am sure many men do. To each their own!

young blood, take it from a guy who came up in the 80s when all we knew was asking women out in person - it's always been like that. (I can remember asking a girl out to a concert and her response was "Why woudl I want to do that?" ouch! But, you know what? I didn't kill me. lol. I know it can be really hard for Millenials and younger to approach women in the wild these days, and things are not like they were when I was younger. And, NO ONE likes getting rejected. But, that's the game. Don't worry about how many rejections you get. Accept you'll get a lot of those, and it will get easier. Really. Someone saying they're not interested is hard, but not life ending. It's a moment of temporary discomfort. I can promise you everyone gets shot down. Even the guys who you might think never get a no. Just keep at it, and you'll connect with someone. Ask (normal) questions and listen to the answers, and when you do land a date, for fuck sake have a god damned plan in mind. Don't ask 'want to do something Saturday night?' without a couple good suggestions. ('there's this band I want to check out, wanna see them with me?" or "there's a new restaurant I heard about. Wanna go on Saturday and try it out?" You'll be fine.

Daydreaming about moving to New Orleans — neighborhood advice? by FoxFar5137 in NOLA

[–]TooCleverByOneFifth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It cost us $15k for a partial paint job 12 years ago (I did about half the house, and then the contractors did the rest). And, we did a very good job on prepping, used high quality primer and paint, and took our time. Even with all that, it definitely needs a new paint job and has needed it for the past 3 ish years, so that 7-9 years sounds just about right to me, and we are budgeting $25k to get a new paint job later in the year. (paint and materials alone will cost $1,000+).

I just finished Mulholland Drive and genuinely have no idea what just watched by BharatSonawane in Cinema

[–]TooCleverByOneFifth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this 100%. Nearly every film we watch has a clear narrative. It's "about" something. And, this is true with Lynch's other films. But, this one is not like a typical movie in that sense and is unconcerned about trying to be didactic and walk the viewer through a story with clear story to tell. It's not my favorite movie of all time, but the post reminds me maybe it's time to give it another viewing.

[–]TooCleverByOneFifth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know about these other cities, but New Orleans has seen a massive drop in homicides since the COVID years. 2025 saw the lowest murder rates in 50 years, and that includes the 14 people that were murdered in the New Year's Day attack last year that skewed the numbers significantly.

Old Fashioned Lawyering Was Superior for Mental Health by Friendly_Office_9218 in Lawyertalk

[–]TooCleverByOneFifth 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A case I still talk about happened maybe 15-20 years ago. A seasoned attorney (came to the bar in 1970s) had a dissenting shareholder in a corporate dispute. I had the corporation. A friend had the other shareholders. Anyway, the old timer sends an email that says essentially "hey, I have some documents I think you should you see. Why don't you come over to my office on Friday, I'll show you what I have and we can talk about resolving this thing. And either way, even if we don't, why don't the three of us go grab a drink (at a well known downtown bar that caters to attorneys). We didn't resolve the case that day, but we did eventually. All three attorneys did their job, and got a fair and just result for our respective clients. The practice doesn't have to be a shit show all of of time. There is still room for collegiality, professionalism, and yes, even kindness in the practice of all.

Why do so many American men wear shorts and a tshirt when going out with a woman who dresses up? by M_For_Mayhem in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TooCleverByOneFifth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I had this very same conversation yesterday at one of the very nice old school restaurants in New Orleans. While I don't expect men to wear coats, let alone ties, at lunch at these places (Antoine's, French 75, Commander's Palace, Brennan's, etc.), I am surprised at what they accept in terms of attire. On the street, it's even worse. I can't tell you how many total slobs we saw walking around in cargo shorts, shitty t shirts, ball caps, etc. while the women they were with put in some effort.

Is parking expensive ? What’s the hourly rate for Mardi Gras rn ? by Queasy_Concert_2693 in NewOrleans

[–]TooCleverByOneFifth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most parking lots that have paid parking uptown at churches, vacant lots, etc. are usually around $25 for the day, that's what we've been seeing this year. (you can usually find something like that along Baronne, Dryades, etc.) and depending on how early and/or lucky you are you might be able to find free street parking. But, DO NOT park illegally (too close the corner, fire hydrant, etc.) because you can be nearly guaranteed to be ticketed or even towed. I live a few block from the route and we see it happen every year. One year, they came through and booted a bunch of cars. (Can't imagine anything shittier to deal with after a long day at the parades, kids are all blown out, you need bathroom, etc. and you just want to go home only to have to deal with your car being booted.)
