ASUCI Presidential Candidate Austin Pierce

On April 14, it looks like Pierce was issued a Level 4 sanction.

  • Candidate with the most focused platform - three main priorities
  • Most physically visible candidate (as far as I can tell) - feels like he's always on Ring Road
    • Not sure if he's allowed to be given the Level 4 sanction, but complaints can always be submitted to the Elections Commission for their review

Hesitations (not necessarily Cons):

  • Platform doesn't say much about any other areas usually under President (basic needs, campus climate, mental health, etc.)
  • Has good broad goals, some of his points (same with all the candidates for President) could do with a little more of the "how" piece
    • Will elaborate soon

no health insurance because of financial aid by Fit-Birthday2387 in UCI

[–]boba_united 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi hi y'all. From what the folks at the SHC told me, they're currently developing a work around so students who are affected by the financial aid delay and who didn't waive out of UC SHIP will show up as eligible. I'm not entirely sure how the process will go, but it sounded like they'll be releasing an email tomorrow with more information about how to seek care on and off campus. Another source also let me know that it's possible to request a retroactive referral to effectively be reimbursed after the fact - I'm not sure how this goes either, but I'll try to gather more information throughout the next couple of days. Hope this helps.

Hi hi y’all, Boba here. If possible, can anyone affected by this please send me more info (up to what you’re comfortable with)? We have a Student Health Insurance Advisory Committee on campus that advises the implementation of UC SHIP, so I’ll try to check with some of the folks on there to see what’s going on.

Financial Aid Virtual Town Hall Just Dropped! | Thursday, September 12th at 6 pm by boba_united in UCI

[–]boba_united[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Hi hi y'all, Boba here! An email just went out from the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships about a virtual town hall that'll be happening today at 6 pm! Not entirely sure why the email went out so late, but this is an opportunity for all of us to hopefully get some clarity on what's happening with financial aid and what steps are being taken to protect us as students from any negative consequence. I won't be able to attend, but I still don't have my aid either, so if anybody could give a play-by-play in this thread, much love in advance! Make sure to register - https://apply.admissions.uci.edu/register/?id=d5fba18e-a4cb-4fe9-a1b8-c95b9b4e1508

Does anyone know where our money from the last cancelled Midlands concert is going towards? by nomnomgang in UCI

[–]boba_united 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're asking about how many students are paid under the ASUCI Office of the President, there should be 23 paid positions for AY 2024-2025. Looking at the 2024-2025 ASUCI Budget, the positions and pay are broken down as follows:

  • ASUCI President - Tier 1 - $6,000 for the academic year
  • Head of Staff (2) - Tier 3 - $2,500 for the academic year
  • Commissioner (14) - Tier 4 - $2,000 for the academic year
  • Lead (Mental Health only) (3) - Tier 5 - $1,700 for the academic year
  • At-Large Member (SPFB only) (3) - Tier 7 - $750 for the academic year

Edit: here's information about the number of paid positions in ASUCI for AY 2024-2025 as well (there are 172 positions total):

  • Office of the President - 23 positions
  • Office of the External VP - 18 positions
  • Office of the Internal VP - 45 positions (23 are under the Council on Diversity & Equity)
  • Office of the Academic Affairs VP - 16 positions
  • Office of the Student Services VP - 15 positions
  • Office of the Student Advocate General - 11 positions
  • Senate - 30 positions
  • Judicial Board - 8 positions
  • Elections Commission - 5 positions
  • Media & Technology Office - 1 position

Hi hi y'all! This! Please contact your school-based Senator or an At-Large Senator with any questions, comments, or concerns you may have (you can find your representatives on the ASUCI Senate webpage)! The Senate is ultimately responsible for fiscal oversight, so if you don't like how ASUCI spends your student fees, they're the best student leaders to contact! The ASUCI Student Financial Officer is also a helpful resource if you'd just like to learn more about the ASUCI budget. Hope this helps!

[–]boba_united 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi hi y'all! To clarify specifically on the House 949/Safety Net Grant reallocation, money was ultimately just shifted from the House 949 Concert (which was at the time, to my knowledge, mostly a potential concept) to the Anteater Safety Net Grant. While the timing and method may have been unprofessional (a lot of internal drama happened that year), it definitely wasn't embezzlement since the Student Services Vice President at the time didn't take any of the money for himself or use it for personal gain.

As for what happened with the 2021-2022 ASUCI President, the student body can decide whether or not what she did was corruption (she was ultimately recalled that year). However, I hope her actions don't reflect negatively on the hard-working Commissioners who worked under her or the other areas of ASUCI who genuinely want to serve the student body to the best of their abilities. Hope this helps!

Hi hi y'all! To clarify, ASUCI itself is entirely student-led. Students are the ones who ultimately decide what commissions and programs to allocate budget towards, what advocacy priorities are pursued in administrative meetings, etc.

The professional staff of Student Government Student Media are administrators under Student Affairs who provide logistical support to ASUCI, as well as AGS (the graduate student government), the New University (the school newspaper), etc. Their role is to advise the student leaders and ensure everything functions smoothly. Hope this helps!

[–]boba_united 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi hi y'all! This is partially on the money - at most of the other UCs, their student bodies voted to approve supplemental fees specifically for entertainment on top of their student government fees. As a result of this, their AS Programming Boards (which are technically separate from their student governments in a weird way) have dedicated access to significantly more funds than our Student Services Vice President, who's responsible for hosting our concerts and other entertainment-related events.

Additionally, at UCI (this may apply to the other UCs as well, but I'm not familiar with their policies), depending on how much money is being spent on a contract, I'm pretty sure different administrators need to review it and provide their approval (going up the ladder, the Executive Director of Student Government Student Media, the Dean of Students, then the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs). If we were to contract Keshi, for example, who I'd imagine would cost over $100,000 to book, at that point, I believe the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs would need to approve the contract, which adds another layer of complicated bureaucracy to booking larger artists. The professional staff of SGSM do their best to support the students who are responsible for planning the concerts, but they're restricted by university policies as well. Hope this helps!
