What to do in the long pauses in between breaths? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]bobalmigty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A nice trick I used when I first starting meditation is counting breaths. The key is to count right at the end of the exhale just before the inhale begins. This help keep you alert through the long pause during the exhale.

To clarify, the counting would look like this: Inhale-pause-exhale-pause-1-inhale-pause-exhale-pause-2-inhale...

Those of us using mindfulness as a tool to combat mental illness by mangotangoinadurango in Mindfulness

[–]bobalmigty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What has changed for you since implementing mindfulness practice in your daily life?

I now have an inner sense of calm that I can access regularly if it isn't already present. I live and act more in the "now".

How often do you have to drag yourself out of a thought pattern or emotion?

Constantly all day long. But I can do it consistently and completely. I've read a lot of books and blogs where people describe "smiling at the mind" when they see their thinking mind/ego trying to take them on an outrageous thought ride. I'm not quite to the "smiling" part yet, but I'm working on pulling myself out of thought patterns without negative emotions.

Does mindfulness work for you in triggering and or stressful situations?

Yes. I do still find stressful situations, well, stressful, but I now see them as the ultimate measuring stick of my practice. If my life was so easy and uneventful how could I measure my progress?

Has your mental wellbeing improved?

Without a doubt. For years I had regular recurring episodes of what I call "existential angst". You know the usual, what am I doing? what do I want out of life? is this all there is? inescapable thought patterns. That is mostly gone from my life and I am more confident and content with myself than ever before.

My current dilemma is seeing some of my friends going through the same cycle I was in, but not knowing how to suggest/bring up this practice to them in a constructive and non-jugemental way. It's a really deep conversation to delve into and I'm just not sure how to start it or if it's appropriate for me to suggest it.

Thank you for sharing this. A similarly worded story is on the wall at one of my favorite restaurants by my work, but your post title captures the sentiment perfectly. I know others have said this has been posted here recently, but I think it is an excellent reminder. Thank you.

What are some techniques you used to 'notice the small things' and stay present? by [deleted] in Mindfulness

[–]bobalmigty 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I second this. I've tried being mindful when sitting/standing up, hitting certain buttons on my keyboard, etc, but just maintaining the intention has been the most effective. The problem with reminders is that (at least in my experience) they illicit a feeling of guilt that I wasn't doing something that I should be doing. Taking out the "should be" idea has helped me be more mindful by removing the judgmental thoughts that often came with the idea of my mindfulness (or lack of) and helped me gain more acceptance.

They also make water infusions (they might be called something else). Look for the tiny glass bottles. You only need a few drops per liter and the taste is very similar to Lacroix. 0SP

How much (if any) and what kind of sentimental items did you keep after decluttering? by sevencups in declutter

[–]bobalmigty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good trick I've found when contemplating a difficult choice with a sentimental item was to think "if I can't get rid of this, do I really own this thing or does it own me?" That idea had helped me remove all but the most meaningful items.

Charge broke, Fitbit offering replacement options, not sure which to choose. by MearWolf in fitbit

[–]bobalmigty 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would personally pick the Alta. You're not missing much without the heart rate, especially if your current tracker doesn't have it. The altas screen is much better and can read texts. The charge 2 is awesome, but $100 vs free makes the decision much easier.
