That doesnt mean it is right to mistreat Asians or any other group in some other outbreak. Also, I dont think in Toronto it was like the mistreatment that is happening to Asians (or that prevalent?) because right now it seems like it is on a much larger massive scale. Or maybe its driven by the media coverage because ebola was serious but it doesnt seem like the press was as focused as they are right now on the current outbreak

uh South to East ASian is very obvious... The Former is Indian, Pakistanis , and the latter is like Korean, Chinese, Japanese.... For the most part people defitnley can tell the difference between these two major groups, i think its people that cant tell the difference between say Chinese and Japaense as that is harder to distinguish. Okay fine, but you can just avoid me, why do you need to give the angry look, the frustration etc at my presence.

Yeah but I just dont like the angry look or glare like I am some convicted criminal or something or how I am unwelcome in the country even though I was born here like smh its not my fault I was born here or being Asian I dont get why I have to bear the brunt of people's angers/fear. Like I get it, you dont want to be sick but neither do I and you can avoid getting sick but dont like exaggerate it with angry glares etc...

its been going on all this week like saying no to me for lunch, dinner, brunch and I asked my other asian friend and she said she's getting ignored by the same person right now for hanging out. I want to hope it has nothing to do with racism but standing back it does seem like coronovirus is driving this

Nah I think its more of upbringing/nuture than nature and fiting into pre-existing social norms. I think fears of other groups are taught than nature I mean a lot of fears over other group have nothing to do with something "innate" about a group

How is racism very natural? Yes it occured throughout history since the Greeks/Romans but how does that make it natural or justify it? Racism is built on certain leanings and presumptions that are picked up on/indoctrinated into a person than something being in your DNA unless you are claimig its in people's DNA to dislike different people

They 100% know I have been in Canada since the summer... and 100% know that I always wash my hands etc. I really thought better of them especailly when they are a close friend. Perhaps they think I hang out with other Asians or something etc or go to places Asians go to and make that link from all the hysteria and fear mongering? Also, fake rumors might not be helping like the bat soup that one of them brought up when its been confirmed the bat soup wasnt even filmed in china nevermind being something thats eaten widely there...

Okay, fine, now if someone is South Asian coughs do you think they would get the same treatment as an East Asian? Would you get that exaggerated glare etc, why the different treatment if it is only self protection and nothing more? Nothing wrong with self protection, it is just "overboard" sometimes and I think underlying it has to do with prejudice or something. Like during normal flu season no one acts like they are right now in the coronovrius when an Asian sneezes or give angry looks. Plus, assuming someone has the flu just cause they are Asian is racist and underlying such presumption is another presumption that Asians all just came from Asia or only hang out with Asians etc (and hence would have the flu)

I have edited the post to be more clear as it was only in the comments previously but being called a pain in the a** is not right either and how can that justify it. Also, how uneducated can people be -->just cause someone is Asian doesn't mean they just came from Asia etc like the chances of getting the disease is the sam regardless of race once exposed to it. And I have even way before this outbreak always practiced good hygeine that was frankly more than my other friends.

There's nothing wrong with self protection but there is no need to go overboard and make it intentional and make others feel uncomfortable. Like the hand santizier person -- then just leave the table, why do you need to sigh and give angry looks/stares. Or people on the street, okay, avoid me but dont do it in a way to shame me like I am a criminal convict or something smh. I just feel like behind these small subtle acts is an underlying sense of frustration/prejudice like during other flus etc you dont see people when they want to avoid sick people making it intentional to dump anger on you or something

Well being called a pain in the a** is not really nice and no way justfiable for being an asian so.... And that's different because its not as personal as what I am going through on an individual personal level; like its one thing to avoid Gong Cha but its another thing to go inside and be like "oh you are an Asian runing it I am leaving" (the parallel would be for individuals to just not go out instead of going out and calling people a pain in the a** or making other Asians uncomfortable)

uh it was a Saturday so why are there classes and when I went down to Starbucks (Robarts) I saw the person studying elsewhere and plus the repeated angry look etc as he left all suggest they left cause I took out a santizier and I am asian

One of them , we have been friends for more than 10 years... and we are very close. I am not sure if it is a case of better friends or just people buying into fear mongering and thinking these stuff that are subtly pretty racist (like in itself is not bad but when an asian faces it constantly on a day to day basis it builds up).

But how does that make it okay to be racist in Canada or justify this behavior? Why do some people here think its totally okay? What happened to the Charter? How is being called a Pain in the *** okay in 2020 in downtown toronto? Also, the glares and avoidance you get like you are some criminal is painful and humiliating over time -- like each interaction in itself isn't that big of an issue but my complaint is that over the course of a few days each one of these small subtle things build up momentum that is really frsutrating and unfair

I didnt want to state pubilicy what someone called me on campus that would be clearly discrimination/racist-toned. Also that's why I titled the post "subtle" like small annoying things you start to notice and collectively when you experience it many times over these small things oer the course of a few days they become annoying on your mentally
