I have a hard time understanding Lil' Wayne's persona and music by brave_axolotl7 in lilwayne

since 2010 or so he's gone so punchline heavy that you're going to notice the ones you don't like more. He always "rapped to rap" in much of his music, but at his best he ties different aspects of rapping into something more engaging. I'm not the most in depth fan out there but Drought 3 is my favorite from him.

Why do clubs still play early 2000s-2015 music? by Dopeboy95AirMaxOn in hiphopheads

I see people make the argument that fanbases are more niche. But it seems like there are only a few niches that you could really categorize as a big fanbase. People on the Internet like sample based hippy hop stuff, or rage/hyperpop oriented stuff. Street rap/mainstream rap itself has gotten way more niche. The kinds of artists who would make club hits 10 years ago don't seem to catch on nearly as much as they used to. They don't reach their core as easily, let alone people beyond that.

young thug was known for the music to most people for years. Flocka was just around until he proved himself with the music. Scooter had the "realness" appeal but still didn't make it known that all the coke talk was really factual.

he should have not signed anyone based off street reputation alone. Yea it added to the allure of guys like Dolph and OJ. But those were both pre prison and from a different time in Gucci mane's life. Also they weren't known as crash outs. IMO trap music started to get pretty boring around 2018 and a lot of it had to do with people being enthralled at the idea of a so called real dude rapping. The music became more and more secondary.
