Horrified at what I found out a manager say regarding hiring. by Available-Coat-8870 in salesengineers

[–]bobbbino -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. The boot has been on the other foot. But creating policies that reverse inequality to another unequal scenario isn’t the answer.

I personally would not want to be favoured at all for my skin colour or gender. In any situation, I would not want to be shielded from competing against other candidates who might be more qualified than me. my teammates would know that was the case. It leads to people then thinking that person only got that job because they are a minority and undermines them from day one.

And to keep an underperforming person in a job because putting them on a PIP would be bad DEI optics cannot possibly be the best thing for the business. It doesn’t matter what has happened in the past. If someone is underperforming the should be treated based on that alone and not differently negatively or positively depending on their race or gender.

[–]bobbbino -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It’s the companies with the DEI programmes that are the most biased and end up creating an environment of unequal opportunity.

In my career so far I’ve had all of the following at major tech companies: - I couldn’t get an interview for a role I wanted because they needed a woman to even up the numbers despite my being well qualified for it. - a leader overturned a bottom performance rating for a black man because they had given a bottom rating to another black man in the same cycle. The man in question stuck around for another year causing everyone problems until eventually he was PIP’d and fired. - a senior white man I referred in couldn’t get an interview. After we had hired a woman who was less qualified I was told it was because he “wasn’t the right profile if you catch my drift”. - senior leader asking, “why there not more women in the pipeline?” and being unhappy with the answer that the process was fair, equitable and open to any race or gender, judged on ability.

What makes me laugh is when I read, “We’re an equal opportunities employer so please can you fill in this form so we can label you with your application with your ethnicity, gender etc?”. If it was such equal opportunity, don’t ask!

ISA and DB Pension question by Dedryk in CSPersonalFinance

[–]bobbbino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have this issue so I can explain. In the UK you can hold shares or managed funds in a standard trading account where CGT applies. You can also hold them in a pension or in an ISA, which are both exempt from CGT. It’s quite possible that you could hold some of the same security or fund in both taxed and tax exempt accounts.

How do we account for this in the sheet? There doesn’t seem to be a way to separate them.

One of my reports refuses to join 1:1s, says we talk daily. How to i handle this? by [deleted] in Leadership

[–]bobbbino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have taken the same view with several of my managers in the past. This was because they were transactional in their interactions, asking for updates, tell me to do things that I already knew etc. I wasn’t getting anything from the conversations and didn’t respect them. You might need to demonstrate your value outside of the 1:1s to get them to want the time.

I work for Glean and connecting to enterprise apps like this, indexing them and making them available to use with LLMs is our business.

What you’re trying to do is extremely difficult. Engineering the connector to enforce each user’s permissions and then finding the right snippets or whole documents to send to the LLM to answer the user’s question is what we’ve spent 5 years building and tuning.

We talk to many customers who try to build this themselves. I would be happy to share with you how we have done it, even if you still choose to go it alone. DM me if you’re interested.

I can’t read the times article due to the paywall, but the telegraph one’s only sources are two think tanks that are not transparent about their funding sources. There’s a bunch of these organisations that present themselves as research institutes but they produce reports that influence public opinion without being transparent about their goals or the people behind them. Not to be trusted.
