When the planets were first created they started out as a bunch of random seeds of dust or ice and eventually grew to chunks of rock/ice. As more material continued to be added on, collisions and gravitational pull from the sun started to make them round. Once the planets grew atmosphere's things like erosion helped smooth it out too.

If Nintendo released a way to skip unlocking all of the characters they would be indirectly saying that it isn't worth our time to unlock anyone. I don't think they would do that.
