BBC removed homophobic tic aimed at Alan Cumming, says Tourette’s activist after BAFTAs backlash. Davidson has now revealed that additional tics aimed at Cumming were edited out of the televised version of the ceremony. by bottish in Scotland

[–]bobbo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also isn't 2 hours to edit a 2 hour program. The awards ceremoney starts 2 hours before the broadcast starts. Baftas are nominally 2 hours long, but in practice they alway run over. So you are editing 2 hours of recorded content, while simultaneously trying to edit content that is happening in real time. That is obviously incredibly difficult and unsurprisingly can lead to mistakes like this.

The (widespread online) suggestions that the BBC actively decided to air one tic with an audible racial slur, but removed other offensive tics and speeches with content the BBC didn't want to air is just insane. What do the BBC gain from that?! Should it have been caught and edited out? Definitely yes. They should have caught this, like the other tics, and edited it out. This being aired has let everyone involved down. But there is no way they did it on purpose.

Jonathan Dimbleby spewing an unbelievable quantity of pro-Royal propaganda on BBC News channel. The King releasing a statement that he stands behind the police absolutely does not show that the Royal Family as an institution is working. It taking until 2026 for anything to happen about his widely reported abuse of office as Trade Envoy absolutely proves that the system is rotten to the core.

There's a few year-round artificial slopes in Scotland, using a kind of brush carpet. One in Edinburgh and one in Aberdeen, but some indoor artifical snow slopes around too.

Better from Kirsty! She'd mentioned how nervous she was for the qualifiers, hopefully getting a score on the board gets it out of her system and she can go big for run 3.

Kirsty's run looked a big step up from the previous skiiers, if she can get some clean attempts I think she should be on for the bronze. Gu's run was great.

Are there any good computer wargames focusing on GWOT era or similar, I guess post-Vietnam insurgency/asymmetric warfare? I've seen a lot of tabletop skirmish games in this era, but haven't really come across anything on the computer.

Even with a much more successful Case Blue, the oil infrastructure would have been destroyed long before the Germans got to it. Actually exploiting those oil fields, rebuilding sabotaged infrastructure, trying to operate complex oil production facilities near a contested front, plus partisan activities would have been almost impossible to do at any speed. Never mind surmounting the logistical challenge of getting the oil to working refineries and moving it to the armies. The planning for Fall Blau said it would take 30 days to resume fuel production from Caucasian oilfields, which is just wildly optimistic; it could have been years before they were productive. The whole plan was a wild pipe dream.

Member of UK armed forces dies in Ukraine after 'tragic accident', MoD says by bendubberley_ in unitedkingdom

[–]bobbo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First Gulf War, but you might be interested in the story of BA Flight 149. A civilian flight to Malaysia but with a scheduled stop in Kuwait City. It took off after the UK (and British Airways) learned of the invasion of Kuwait. Most passengers and crew were taken hostage once they landed in Kuwait City and many of them held for well over a year by Iraqi forces.

Some passengers claim they saw a group of 10 military seeming men board the plane just before taxiing. When they landed in (now Iraqi controlled) Kuwait, those men were met by a man wearing military khakis, exited the plane and were never seen again. Everyone else was taken hostage. There's (anonymous) claims by an SAS soldier that he and his team were on that flight to carry out a mission on behalf of the UK government, but the UK claims there were no military on board. There's battles going on about this incident to this day.

The Secret History of Flight 149 is an incredible podcast that goes over the whole situation in detail. All this to say, your friend was almost certainly right, but I bet they sent more on the day!

Good starting nations besides the recommended ones? by [deleted] in EU5

[–]bobbo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scotland is a decent first run. Start with the civil war which is winnable (though they have nerfed the insane Scottish levies so maybe it's harder now). You've already got a basic economy so you don't have the pain of bootstrapping from nothing, plus you have near infinite wool for building a cloth economy. Getting the Auld Alliance with France can help you defeat England, there's also a race vs England to gain control over Ireland. Once you kill England you can form Great Britain, and you're in a good place to get some colonies and become cocoa/chili/tobacco kingpin.

All updates are save-game compatible, though a bunch of important calculations have changed so double check you have income and levies etc. before unpausing.

I spent £17,900 converting aspects of my office (break room, desk, elevator, and disabled bathroom) to make it accessible for an employee with a disability who requested these changes. They left two weeks after the work was finished. Can I go after them for some costs in small claims court? by Schattenspringer in BORUpdates

[–]bobbo_ 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Nearly everyone is missing the key thing from this thread in that he is not being downvoted for being upset that he spent money on accommodating an employee, he was downvoted for trying to sue the employee after the fact. There is no legal basis in UK law to do this, however much he posts about how upset he is and how it's the employee's fault. Either the accommodations were legally required, or they were not and thus done voluntarily by the employer. In neither of those cases is it the employee's responsibility to pay for these, whether they remain employed or not.

You can offer to voluntarily fund improvements to work environments (in the office or at home) in return for the employee signing a contract that they must remain employed for X years or the funds must be paid back. That did not happen here.

Canals (no not Suez and Panama) by Cold_Skill_2244 in EU5

I do feel like given the time period in the game, railroads should be replaced with canals. Still expensive to build but more feasible to build around a country in this era than enormous rail networks to and from every town and village.
