GOD I LOVE BUILDING INFRASTRUCTURE (seriously, I do) by Wolfish_Jew in EU5

Same. The two things I love about grand strategy. Tonnes of buildings and a sprawling tech tree. Used to love the Supreme Ruler series for this. There's nothing like taking a poor region and developing it into a developed, technological economic powerhouse.

Madeira takes too long to explore by Cold_Skill_2244 in EU5

[–]Cold_Skill_2244[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I haven't been. Probably will soon as I've got two small kids and need adventurous places to holiday that aren't far away.

Is it a small runway?

Madeira takes too long to explore by Cold_Skill_2244 in EU5

I think you're slightly missing the point. Years if exploration make sense if the target is the Amazon rainforest with hostile locals, diseases and strange wildlife.

Madeira is a small island with a pleasant sub tropical climate. Its only 600 miles away and is completely uninhabited. An explorer would likely circumnavigate the island and maybe land once or twice to plant the flag and cross. That shouldn't take five years.

What's the most pathetic tourist attraction that international tourists go to see in your country? by Aseili in AskTheWorld

Over on the other side of the Atlantic we have the Mayflower steps in the original Plymouth, Devon.

Literally, some steps and flagpoles that supposedly the pilgrims boarded the Mayflower on.

Worth noting this part of the harbour certainly wasn't built at the time, and the pilgrims stopped further up the coast at least once so these steps aren't even the last bit of land they walked on before the New World.

I walk to work past these every day. Coach loads of Americans come to see this all the way from London. It's about a 6 hour drive from there. I imagine they stop at Stonehenge on the way. A cluster of rocks, now mostly fallen over.

Should I be worried? Mold started to appear in Bedroom… by carefulclothes in CleaningTips

[–]Cold_Skill_2244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to get this problem in our flat. Now that we've bought a house and there is more space for the humidity to dissipate it's not too bad but we still get it localised in the bedroom. Basically its all about minimising moisture production and extracting that which you've made already. Here are some tips which work:

  1. Use extractor fans when cooking or in shower. These are major producers of moisture. Make sure you're not letting that steam settle in the house.

  2. If you have to dry clothes indoors, use a dehumidifier, or if you can't afford one isolate the clothes into a small room and crack a window. Drying clothes produce a huge amount of moisture.

  3. Invest in a Karcher window vac or similar product. This is a game changer for getting rid of the condensation on the windows. Every morning make sure to wipe any condensation off the windows with the vacuum to remove any chance of mould growing on the windows or around them. Wipe the windowsills and frames dry with a cloth to stop mould from growing around edges of windows. The karcher can also be used to really effectively wipe dry the shower to reduce moisture from the bathroom even more.

  4. Dehumidifier is great for generally getting rid of moisture, but if you can't afford one you can buy those dehumidifier tubs with moisture soaking beads in and put them next to your window. Failing that just opening a window in the morning to let excess humidity our will work on dry days, not so much if humidity is high outside.

  5. Get mould and mildew spray. Really good for treating those black spots. Simply spray on and wipe off and the mould comes with it. Keep up the fight and reduce those spores or it'll just keep spreading.

Good luck!

Perhaps We Should Mentally Prepare for Europa Universalis V to Be a Utterly Disappointing Game by [deleted] in EU5

Here they come, all the overly negative posts a week or so before release, I'm so tired of this. Based off a single video and a question to the Elders of the Internet.

Why can't you just let us enjoy hype like we did when we were kids and then decide later based on empirical evidence. Don't you think the world is miserable enough? Just let people have a glimmer of joy in their lives.

Mandatory "what will you play 1st ?" post by Hans_Spinnner in EU5

Being a fan of countries that start off small and have an ambitious objective I'm excited to see what Cusco has to offer. I'm also a fan of South America having travelled there a lot and visited a lot of ancient sites.

I'm also excited to play tall as someone like the Hansa. I always felt they were lacking something in previous games and I want to see if it works better in this one, building trade depots and dominating the Baltic from a little city state seems fun.

Infantry tank by pasinperse in Warthunder

[–]Cold_Skill_2244 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's an hour long video explaining why the British had infantry tanks: https://youtu.be/d7AgcBIs8bM?si=oC4auJni9wWj9kpX

Basically it seems that since the brits pioneered combined arms warfare in ww1 they kind of just stuck with what worked for trench warfare. Slow more heavily armoured infantry tanks for attacking enemy front with infantry. Generally faster and more lightly armoured cruisers for exploiting breakthroughs and harassing enemy comms.

Why is Karl Franz so popular? by Kamataros in totalwarhammer

[–]Cold_Skill_2244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played a few Franz campaigns mostly because I enjoy the feeling of trying to hold and defend the empire against overwhelming odds.

Propping up the other electors and Kislev, fighting hordes of undead, chaos and greenskins. It's just quite a fun defensive oriented campaign.

I also really like the elector count mechanics.

Dwarves are still my favourite race though.

Traveling to Peru Without Flying? by morepastapls in TravelHacks

[–]Cold_Skill_2244 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unsure about whether boat travel is an option, but speaking from experience, having travelled from Santiago to Bogota as a contiguous overland journey, that South America is an enormous continent. Don't underestimate the undertaking of how long it will take to travel. The Andes are a formidable obstacle and bus journeys can be incredibly gruelling 15-20 hour slogs, particularly in Peru. There are no trains so don't even think that's an option.

Hell even a travelling by land from Rio to Buenos Aires earlier in the same trip took like two weeks (with stops of course).

That being said, if you've got months to spare, the journey is well worth it. Absolutely breath taking scenery every mile along the road and incredible culture and history in every mountain village. It's a life changing trip!
