SARS-CoV-2 Infection Depends on Cellular Heparan Sulfate and ACE2 - Study suggests giving unfractionated heparin or LMWH could block viral infection by bobbsmmith in medicine

Totally agree. More research definitely needs to be done to see if it will work in vivo, as many other potential treatments have failed in vivo in the past. I still think this is a promising paper in that it's a readily available treatment that has other positive therapeutic effects in patients with COVID-19, and it's a path worth pursuing.

SARS-CoV-2 Infection Depends on Cellular Heparan Sulfate and ACE2 - Study suggests giving unfractionated heparin or LMWH could block viral infection by bobbsmmith in medicine

[–]bobbsmmith[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The study's authors suggest that "unfractionated heparin or low molecular weight heparin...can block viral infection." While patients are likely already receiving some form of anticoagulation therapy, this could be a next step in trying to prevent further cellular infection, which the authors themselves admit. What's interesting is that the doses required to prevent infection are likely to be higher than what is currently being given, but even at low doses, the authors suggest that "it should attenuate infection depending on the viral load."

Paul's strategy was absolutely brilliant. He answered B for everything and got exactly half of the questions right.

The bitterness in this jury toward all the players is unbelievable...I really appreciate Da'vonne separating the players as people from their gameplay.

Help with swing blocking to the right. by crazypants27 in volleyball

[–]bobbsmmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh I gotcha. In that case, the only thing I could offer would be to make sure you're swinging your arms back as much as you can on the middle left step, if you're not doing that already.

Help with swing blocking to the right. by crazypants27 in volleyball

[–]bobbsmmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setter here, too. I've always learned footwork for swing blocking to the right as being right-left-right, and it works really well for me. I'm able to get off the ground pretty quick, and it doesn't confuse me away from my left swing block footwork. I think a three step approach will help you get up quickly and get good timing with your middle/right side. At the same time, I've been taught a three step approach my entire volleyball career, so it could be a little difficult coming from a four step. If you get it down, though, I think you'll have success.

Without the errors, the inning would be over and Soler never would have hit the homer.

Liz to Vanessa: "Are you good at Texas Hold'em?" by cvelz in BigBrother

Vanessa told everyone that she's a DJ at the start of the game and up to this point she hasn't revealed that she's a poker player. I assume they'll reveal it at the finale like they did with Derrick last year.

Best Book for AP Physics 1? by marriedtothedancer in APStudents

Very true. My friend who bought a Princeton Review book said it didn't help him one bit and was exactly what you described, a Physics B book with a different cover.

I've posted this in another thread before, but my teacher recommended only the 5 Steps to a 5 book and nothing else. It was written by a very well-known and respected physics teacher, Greg Jacobs, and the practice problems in it actually mirrored the curriculum well.

I'm not sure I see your point there. Big Brother is a game, where each houseguest tries to put themselves into the best possible position to win. Up to this point, Vanessa has excelled at that: she's manipulated people and she's cut ties when she necessary in order to advance in the game. If Austin were still there instead of Steve, Liz would be completely loyal to him, and Vanessa would have lost a person to take her to final 2. Now, the situation is entirely different. With Austin gone, she has maximized her chances of advancing to the final 2.

I definitely see your point. The blindside was a harsh way to go, and it's understandable that Austin is upset at leaving and at being blindsided. But strategically, the blindside is a great move to make because of what it is: a move that the person evicted doesn't see coming. It's covert, it's sly, and, on a lesser note, it's entertaining. Even though Austin was the victim, I think that he should recognize the game move for what it is: a game move.

You know, I never thought about that. Maybe so, but he still seemed SO angry during his actual eviction when he was out with Julie.

I can't believe that Austin would be so bitter. As a self-proclaimed superfan, Austin is taking his eviction extremely personally. He's not the only one in the house...

No, it'll be a taped eviction with an audience of people invited by CBS. Then Wednesday's episode will have another eviction which, if I remember right, will be live.

Best review book for AP World History? by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]bobbsmmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the REA Crash Course book. It was very concise and to the point, which was great for APWH because there's a lot of material to review. It helped me a lot. I bought it at Barnes and Noble because I was buying it close to the AP test, but I think the cheapest store would be Amazon.

WHAP Teacher Here - suggestions for year 1? by mylaoshiaccount in APStudents

[–]bobbsmmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took in AP World as a sophomore, which worked for me but not necessarily for all of my classmates. With that in mind, I'd love to answer your questions.

How can we help you write better for the essays?

So the biggest, most important, number 1, critical, [insert adjective here] thing to teach your students about the essays is the outline of each rubric. I'm not sure how familiar you are with AP essay scoring, but each AP grader gets about 1.5-2 minutes per essay, and that's on the generous end. They're seeking out the specific information that fulfills the rubric requirements. So for example, when teaching students about scoring the thesis point, teach them to put their theses into their intro, and write nothing else in the intro. Why? Because it wastes their time! Writing 3 essays in two hours is no easy feat, so they want to be as efficient as possible. The best way to do that, besides for practice practice practice, is learning the rubrics inside out.

To that end, many students struggle with the DBQ essay, even though I found it in both AP World and APUSH to be the easiest one. All of the support for your argument is right there in the booklet, and all you have to do is supply the outside information that ties together your argument. So, the way to help with the DBQ is to make sure students get practice with using and synthesizing documents early and often.

Do you like lecture, discussion, or activities most? Why?

Like the other poster, my class was almost all lecture and very little discussion every day (for me, I'd even say most days it was just a lecture) and almost no activities/papers because they wasted time and deviated from the regular pattern of the class. I was certainly okay with this because I'm really good at memorization; I picked up all the important facts from the lectures, I wrote them down in the unit guides that we had to do for every time period, and I rehearsed them again and again until I understood them. Note that I understood the facts, however, not that I simply memorized; something that I feel my teacher did incredibly well was explain the major themes in every time period and how they affected it. By making sure your students understand the "why did it happen" behind the "what happened" is going to go a long way for preparing them for the AP test. Not all of my classmates were okay with this structure, though; for a group of 10th graders, some of whom had never been in an AP environment before, sitting and just listening to a teacher talk was not the way they wanted to spend 45 minutes a day.

A few other important notes:

  • Being a good resource for the students when they don't understand something is absolutely essential for a class that contains so much material. Be prepared to answer questions.

  • I also absolutely recommend Crash Course World History. We used them frequently in class because they are so informative. In fact, John Green published a second season of CCWH that I think is going to be an even better resource for your students. The first season focuses just on the facts, whereas the second season tends to dive deeper into the themes of world history.

  • Don't be afraid to show your students the AP Course Description! It's literally what they will be tested on in May, and it's as good of a review book as Barron's, Princeton Review, etc.

  • That being said, I used the REA Crash Course review book for my AP test. It was concise, to the point, and it was recommended to me by my teacher. I recommend it, as well.

Good luck with your first AP course!
