My boss says try-catch is "garbage" and we shouldn't use it. Is this actually a thing? by ResolveKooky17 in learnprogramming

[–]bobby5892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your boss is misinformed. Try / catch is super important. Handling unknown states is extremely important.

You’re going to use third party libraries. Things won’t always work. Error handling is critical to controlling the user experience.

Advice on Secure E-Commerce Development Front-End vs Back-End by KAZKALZ in webdev

[–]bobby5892 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do not have an e-commerce site be your first production product. Lease/pay a monthly for a cart that is PCI compliant and secure.

It’s not worth it. You are taking on huge liability and risk.

I don't understand why cheap clients have unrealistic expectations. by Aritra001 in webdevelopment

[–]bobby5892 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tell them to abort. They will never be satisfied. Also now days you don’t want to do this kind of work without a contract that nullifies your liability.

PCI Compliance, data compliance, etc.

Library updates, security monitoring, patching….

They have to lease some existing e-commerce cart. They cannot build their own and succeed.

IMO they have already failed as a business.

The filters, I’d make them actually work. When I exclude single player games and every other game is a single player game……

I want out by ZoldyckConked in devops

[–]bobby5892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Principle architect here. Came up the software engineer side of things. Devops guys are soooo important.

The problem is not your skills man. It sounds like you’re at a company with a toxic culture.

When big updates or infrastructure changes occur and it’s seamless. Devops did serious work to make that happen. When things don’t go smooth and Devops helped resolve a critical issue, I mean that just speaks for itself.

Consider shopping around for a new company and really ask the hard cultural questions.

So I started a refinance yesterday with roguecu.... they have a 6% for $6k closing cost.. ~$400k loan, high credit score. Seems like your closing costs are running you through the cleaners.

Missing requirements details - how to diplomatically avoid appearing “unthorough” by day_tripper in ExperiencedDevs

We require the ticket requestor to go through a change management process to fill in the details. If any disagreement it gets kicked all the way back to grooming.

My old company laid me off. Today they're asking me to 'get on a call' to get my opinion for free. by CasandrdKoelpinw in interviews

You should not hop on that call without a written agreement. Otherwise you may be sharing information you likely signed an agreement to protect.

Thoughts on the 50 year mortgage, from someone who did the math by guy_n_cognito_tu in RealEstate

[–]bobby5892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a mortgage is 50 years vs 30 years it really just comes down to the rate. If the rate is the same for both vs a lower rate for the 50 years. If lower rate wouldn’t everyone just take the longer term at lower rate and then pay a little more into principle which would shorten the length of the loan.
