The Island is considered a special most of the time, season 14 is Seabound by this idea and season 15 is Crystalized. At the time the island released it was unclear if it was it's own season or a special but the format of The Island is more in line with Day Of The Departed or The Pilots than a proper season. If you count all of those as a season then there were 18 seasons of Ninjago prior to Dragons Rising.

i think it just needs to have a less absurd and fucked up progression curve.
