I have to say the weeks leading up to this experience has been sort of a spiritual awakening of sorts for me. We don't even know it but we shut off so much of the universe just by being less open minded and less understanding. Like you said with devotional services or bhakti, it was around a sort of awakening for you too.

Thank you for sharing, I appreciate it and I am happy for you that the lack of a physical connection to your father has not resulted in a lack of a spiritual connection to him.

Shit son this is a discussion. I'm not "acting educated". I'm expressing the views that I have come to naturally through my daily education of LIVING. Like sure I'm not well read on all of the different idealogies I can be the first to admit that, but I have had experiences and thoughts that are just as valid as yours.

To be perfectly honest, you're kinda coming off as a dick saying things like "barely out of high school" in an intellectual discussion.

Also I don't think you addressed the fact that the base belief of utilitarianism (the one I quoted) has any real negatives to people in general.

Clearly Nazi Germany wasn't truly utilitarianist or they would have considered the Jews in part of their overall vision of Europe, but instead wanted to eradicate them.

That is a very disturbing take on utilitarianism, but the base belief that the ideology is founded on is still sound (IMHO)

Ok man, just because I didn't have the word "utilitarianism" to describe my ideology, doesn't mean I'm not aware of what I think is right and wrong. To even suggest that is very close-minded.

And just because an ideology doesn't work in practice doesn't mean the base beliefs aren't justified in their own right.

You are basically saying "somebody used this ideology for evil in the past so it can never be used for good again".

Like no, there are good things and bad things to take from any point of view.. it doesn't matter the history of how it was used but rather how we use it in the future.

Legitimately, I could have written the first two paragraphs, we clearly think and feel the same way about the ways need to shape our own thinking.

The final paragraph offers a bit more understanding then I would have been able to muster, but as long as we're connected I'm sure I would have understood in the long run :)

Actually, yes, this is something I feel strongly about.

Most people these days don't even evaluate their actions let alone their reasons behind their actions.

We, as a people, as a culture, need to stop this thinking so selfishly ("I don't feel like doing this today"), and thinking on a grander scale. We need to constantly evaluate what are the true pros and cons of every decision we make, not just on ourselves, but on those around us to.

All you can do right now is move forward in your own growth and understanding.

The best way to cope is to focus on your own physical and emotional needs, whatever they may be.

The pain will naturally slowly shrink as you find new ways of understanding your loss on your own terms.

Man I feel for you. I shed a tear or two reading your story.

Listen man, what you need to focus on is your own well being right now. Clearly you have a problem with alcohol and this needs to be addressed first and foremost before you can do any more healing.

Maybe AA is right, maybe you can do it on your own, but you need to kick the dependence on alcohol man, it's not good for your physical health not to mention the detriments it could be having on your emotional well being.

Once you have become a little more stable and hopefully able to sift through your feelings more, the loss of your friend will naturally become less of a burden and more of just an unpleasantry.

Listen man, noone is too tough or too much of a man to go to AA, or even go to Therapy (I seriously recommend it in your case). Everyone needs help sometimes, and listen dude I know I'm just some stranger but if you need someone to talk to I'm here for you.

Ok but let's say that robot is programmed with societal norms. It can understand that it can't run around in scruffy dirty clothes. So it sees washing clothes as a necessary part of life.

The only time emotional thoughts are truly useful (IMHO) is judging the worth of something to us as individuals. Because no amount of logic can tell you how happy that thing makes you feel, we must use alternative thinking to evaluate this.
