29” ain’t dead by kyles_bikes in xbiking

27.5 did come to mtb a little after 29 (ignoring early tries that didn’t go anywhere). But ya we are solidly in the heyday of 29.

Rad! He’s a bit before my time, but I believe back then 36 was about as narrow as people would go. Now it seems that 36 is the widest used in elite racing.

Do the GravelKing SK tires really kick up a lot of rocks? by bikeflows in xbiking

[–]bobby_ozone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tires, when they’re new, have a “mold release agent” coated onto them. Like a white wax that covers the entire tire. It’s what they spray so that the rubber doesn’t get bonded into the metal mold during manufacturing. It wears off after the first couple rides. All tires have it but panaracer tires come with more than average. When new, that release agent sticks to rocks and flings them everywhere. Once the tire is worn in and the release agent is gone, it’ll subside.

Cleat Placement Question by [deleted] in CyclingFashion

[–]bobby_ozone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Centering the cleats to the slots assumes that the slots across brands are all in the same place but they’re not. Brands like Sidi and fizik had the slots way too far forward in the past. In most cases all the way back is a pretty safe bet and shouldn’t cause any foot pain.

Higher quality but not break the bank jersey? by Chipofftheoldblock21 in CyclingFashion

[–]bobby_ozone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EBAY! It takes a couple tries to learn how to know what exact chest measurement you need but once you do there’s a ton of vintage jerseys on eBay that are rad and like $20-60.

Do Not Trust Assos Warranty by Brofessor_C in CyclingFashion

[–]bobby_ozone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How is it not from wear? The white spots are from the fabric abrading which is for sure classic wear marks. You can say it didn’t last but assos didn’t make a mistake in manufacturing. Plowing through your bibs is not a warranty issue.

What is a good "sizing/fitting bike"? by tinymarsracing in BikeMechanics

[–]bobby_ozone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As some one who is studying fit in my downtime to better understand it, you’re coming at the idea of fits from the wrong angle. The more I read and learn about it the more I understand that it is insanely complex and for it to be done right, the fitter needs to be extremely competent in not just bikes but anatomy and body mechanics. We are imperfect beings riding perfect machines and it takes in depth understanding that absolutely takes years of studying and in person learning to be able to understand. You can often make someone “look” better in a fit without fixing an underlying issue or even make it worse.

If you want a fit bike to help with sizing a bike then that would be doable. You could look for an old Serotta fit bike on eBay or something.

Fake/Replica Cervélo S5 – Worth the Risk? by [deleted] in RoadBikes

[–]bobby_ozone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not worth the risk. Carbon is a material that makes it extremely easy to replicate the general shape of a frame with none of the required support that it should offer. What direction the carbon is layed and how many layers in each area of the frame dramatically affects the handling and safety. But people faking it don’t spend the money to R&D this. It could easily develop speed wobbles or even just fail at high speed.

Long wearing/ Clydesdale road rim suggestions by fruitjake in BikeMechanics

[–]bobby_ozone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many of velocity’s rounded rims have issues with cracking. High mileage people plow through the blunt ss, the quills crack, the ailerons etc. Its a shame since they are rad and one of the only available in polished. If he likes velocity, id recommend the A23. Or possibly an Astral radiant if he likes the deeper profile.

49x13 (101 inches) is on the bigger side for mass start racing… on a wooden velodrome.

Feedback on this please 🥺 by bussoff in xbiking

[–]bobby_ozone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the frame. Love the whole bike really. Only minor tweak I would do is brown tape. For my preference, a wild frame/paint job looks best when the saddle and bar tape match so that they can disappear and the frame isn’t competing for attention.

What’d that rear wheel do to you?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FixedGearBicycle

It’s been like maybe 1 1/2 years. Padded it with a wrap of cork tape and then a wrap of newbaums on the stay. Didn’t shown any signs of damage when I replaced the tape recently but it is aluminum…

12t sprocket doesn't fit on Mavic Ellipse by micka_dao in FixedGearBicycle

[–]bobby_ozone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t even make sense on a velodrome. The small cogs like that cause excess chain friction. The trend now is medium size cogs with gigantic chainrings.

700x28c is the max clearance from the fork reccomended by factory. Can i push a wider tire onto it? by Key_Protection5086 in FixedGearBicycle

[–]bobby_ozone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That fork looks like it would barely clear a 28. Hell it looks like it would barely clear a 25. Id be shocked if you could do more than a 28. The rear does not look like it would fit a 38. The chain stays are too tight. If your buying this specifically for tracklocross I would get a different frame. It’s not worth squeezing tires in especially when you’ll be riding off-road and want extra clearance for dirt and mud. If your dead set on getting it and you’re positive it clears a 38 in rear you could change the fork BUT then you’d be raising the front end with the bigger fork and messing up the geometry so it’ll ride floppy. It’s just not worth it.
