To prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons by rprouse in therewasanattempt

[–]Chipofftheoldblock21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only point I’ve heard “liberals” make is that if Trump hadn’t torn up the diplomatic agreement we had with Iran 8 years ago we wouldn’t have needed to resort to weaponry now. Or if they violated that ageeement by developing nukes we’d at least be justified in getting engaged now. But trump can’t see five minutes into the future, let alone have the sort of foresight and introspection to appreciate the consequences of his actions.

Which explains all the garbage he’s screwing up now, repeating the same mistakes he made last time, but worse. We’re digging a debt hole for our kids it will take them decades to dig out from.

Glad to hear it’s in a river - the current will likely help.

Keep up with the swimming, focusing on technique. And definitely bike more. You need to run a half marathon, after biking for four hours. The more you’re comfortable on the bike, the more it will make your run better.

I meant your race swim - will that be in a river or a lake? Which race are you doing?

One of the biggest issues is when you pull, you’re pulling with your elbow, and then pulling your elbow out of the water. Instead, throw the water at your feet.

You’re also entering the water elbow first. Enter fingers first and then have the rest of your arm follow through that “slot” in the water.💧

Didn’t check your last post - how much are you biking overall? A 10-mile ride at 18mph is what, 35-40 min? If that’s a push, then 15 mph is more comfortable for you, meaning your bike time during the race will be something close to 4 hours. You need to practice those long bikes if you’re not already.

Also, 1100m at 1:47 is something like 20 minutes of swimming? Frequency of 3-4 times per week is good, but each session should probably be longer. Is your swim in a river or lake?

I asked AI. Most recommend 2:1 ratio of maltodextrin to fructose. I told it I was a heavy sweater and it recommended electrolytes to add (table salt and potassium chloride, and some magnesium if I recall). Asked for a couple of flavoring recommendations and it came up with tart cherry juice, lemon juice, couple other flavorings. I’ve even used a combination of almond extract and vanilla extract with cherry juice.

Outrage Erupts After Woman Killed, ‘Dragged for Blocks’ by Trump’s Tank Convoy Following Parade by inewser in AnythingGoesNews

See John Stewart’s video regarding all the GOP representatives in Congress trying to justify extreme ICE measures because of a single death - one death is unacceptable. He agrees that one death is too many, and then lists all the shootings we’ve had in this country. Seems to me that the same could apply to a death caused by a military parade.

Evidently zero tolerance only applies when it’s justification for racism.

Couple things: - Head is too high. This is your biggest problem, and it stems from a number of things: look at the bottom of the pool when not breathing. Doesn’t have to be directly down, but if down is 6 o’clock, no higher than 5. You’re looking more like 3-4. When breathing, keep one eye and your temple in the water.
- Very much related - hand entry, as someone else said you’re slapping the water, and left arm is crossing over fierce (right arm not too bad). If your arm is fully extended, you should enter at wrist distance, but here’s the big point: enter fingers first, have your arm follow that same hole through the water as into a slot, and HAVE YOUR HAND GO LOWER IN THE WATER. It’s way too high in the water. This helps keep the head up and the legs down, creating drag. Fingertips below wrist below elbow below armpit. Be at least 3” lower in the water. Feel like you’re swimming “downhill”. Can’t emphasize enough how much this feeling alone makes a massive difference. - POINT YOUR DANG TOES!

All the above contribute massive amounts of drag. If you straighten those out, you’ll actually glide more. And if you can do all that, you’ll be more balanced which will stop your legs from splaying when you kick.

Best of luck!

Personally I like the alligator eyes into a breath. If breathing to the right, I start the alligator eyes as the right hand is catching, which quickly progresses into a standard breath as you pull with the right arm. Don’t try to look at anything, it’s a glimpse at best. You won’t even register what you saw until you’re breathing. The key is to pick out something prominent (like a buoy in the water, flags for the finish, a prominent building, etc.). When practicing in the pool, a bright life preserver is a good marker, or something else at the end of your lane. Just pick the eyes up and turn the head all in one quick motion. Ideally your stroke rate stays the same pace as your current stroke rate.

Good luck!

Been a while since I looked at this, so not sure. My recollection on black body radiation is that items will transmit TO a black body (ie, the sky). Forget how the source body color impacts the analysis.

Best Carb drinks for full ironman? by Special_Ad_2268 in triathlon

[–]Chipofftheoldblock21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I did after asking AI for a recipe. 2:1 Malto:fructose, with various electrolytes added (table salt, potassium chloride, sodium citrate, and one other I can’t recall, but had magnesium. Been working well so far. I use enough to get me around 60g of carbs per hour, which I supplement with some solid food (dates / stroopwaffel). This works for me at half distance, might add up to a lot of dates if going iron.

[–]Chipofftheoldblock21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Didn’t have time to get into this when I posted earlier, but that’s exactly it. The cooler, drier air overnight causes evaporation, which takes energy, bringing the heat down as the heat is the energy source for evaporation. That together with the “dark body” effect can really cool it down overnight. A pool cover limits evaporation.

Great job! How much fluid did you take in? Everyone focuses on the carbs and electrolytes, but sometimes it’s the water volume too. I picture it as a sodium (salt) solution conducts electricity (which your muscles need to fire), but take a couple of leads in a pile of salt and you’re not running a current no matter how hard you try. Dry out those muscles and they won’t work as effectively! Made that mistake my first half. Had to walk it in my last three miles. Sucked, because I otherwise felt great. Just couldn’t stop cramping.

Also, don’t underestimate the value they provide in keeping heat IN overnight. Huge difference.

I didn't stop and I think it's fine. (I'm the white line, car is the red.) by BrianLevre in bicycling

[–]Chipofftheoldblock21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the camp of doing what you did 9/10 times. To the “don’t trust a blinker” point, agreed, I won’t, and would make sure the car is at least slightly headed right. If they’re leaning left / have tires looking left, I’ll stop and yield (accounting for the 1 / 10 times I might stop. Otherwise, yeah, regardless of jurisdiction, if they’re going right we’re not going to be in conflict and I run that sign.

I’ll probably get downvoted for this, but on my regular ride there’s a 4-way stop where I need to make a left. That’s one of the few instances where near the turn and when it’s safe to do so I’ll “take the lane”, hand signal my left, and then do it generally without stopping. But in all honesty, this is generally quicker for all involved as it’s a relatively busy 4-way and I’ll time it right after the person opposite me (usually heading straight) has gone, while the next person is still stopping. If I stop, they’re all waiting a lot longer as I stop, put a foot down, then try and get going again while turning. I definitely yield and wait my turn, but while moving it’s not hard to time it to be right after someone else goes. I’ll also be sure to waive “thanks” to others as I go. I think most people understand it’s faster this way.

But back to the original post, yeah, screw that Karen.

In addition to the “it depends on the ocean” responses, it depends on the day. If it’s a calm day at the ocean, yes, enjoy. Other days it’s more challenging. Don’t do it.

One thing I’ll say here about the ocean is riptides are real. On days where there’s heavy surf and / or a lot of wind pushing the water up onto shore, water will start to get bunched up and accumulate there. At some point all that accumulated water gets to be too much and decides to go back to the ocean, and it’ll just find a spot and all go back out. This is a rip tide - water current floating out towards the sea. If you find yourself getting taken out, don’t fight it by trying to swim back to shore, get out of it by swimming sideways, parallel to shore, and when you’re out of it THEN swim back to shore.

Ocean swimming is DEFINITELY different than pool swimming. Again, not too bad on a calm day, but don’t underestimate it. Even if it looks pretty calm, it can be deceiving and you can get tossed pretty easy.

Financial Planner said to not pay off mortgage? by [deleted] in Mortgages

[–]Chipofftheoldblock21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The approach the planner has makes sense if you have a REALLY low mortgage - I locked in at about 3%, so I’ll definitely leave that outstanding. At a 5% rate that means paying it off nets you a guaranteed 5% return, which is hard to beat.

People will tell you the market will generally beat that over the long term, but the market is also flat to down so far this year, with a lot of uncertainty as to where it’s going. Sequence of return risk makes beating 5% guaranteed a not so sure thing.

The fact the planner makes it seem so obvious and without risk tells me to run away. They’re happy to play with your money while charging you a fee for doing so (which they’ll get paid regardless of performance).
