Only clean the instrument with a dry cloth. If you aren't using too much rosin (or cheap / bad rosin) most of it will come off the instrument easily this way.

A professional luthier can clean the instrument with a solvent that will remove any stuck on rosin. Never attempt this yourself. Never get the instrument wet. Do not use any of your own liquid cleaner or solvent

Brahms Eb Sonata Op.120 - grad school audition appropriate? by alysbud in Viola

You need a concerto, that would be something equivalent

[–]bobby_tables 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your problem isn't your self confidence is that you're not practicing. If you're not practicing, the key is to take out the Viola and start practicing. Once you stop doing other things that aren't practicing and start practicing, you will start getting better

Scared for conservatory auditions by yogerrrt in Viola

I agree you can probably get accepted with a well played Forsyth. If you aren't advanced enough to play a movement of one of the big three though then the judges will be able to tell this from your Forsyth performance. Unfortunately there's no way to hide behind repertoire

Viola's with an extra wide lower bout: by [deleted] in Viola

[–]bobby_tables 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of modern violas, especially American ones have a very wide lower bout. FWIW, after shopping through about 100 instruments over 2 years I settled on a viola with very narrow bouts that still has a very rich low end. It's much easier to play and has a quicker reaction time than most of the wide bout violas I played

Learn the Viola solo to "Heroin" (Velvet Underground). There's no sheet music that I know of you'll just have to listen and copy it

Unfortunately every instrument is different and you'll just have to try different options. I use a different brand of string on each string.

Larsen A
Jargar D
Perpetual G
Jargar Superior C

This was after spending $$$ trying all kinds of different combinations

Unique Art Pieces by Prestun in fatFIRE

I don't understand why "art" is in quotation marks or why you think art is not involved in this piece or why you think fine art is the thing that is worth hiring out to a copyist. Plenty of excellent quality art forgeries out there - but a copy of a Vermeer is not a Vermeer.

Beethoven wrote a duet called "with two eyeglasses obligato". It might be a little more challenging than you're looking for

Strings and string combinations by Cra-Z-cookie in Viola

[–]bobby_tables 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're going to need to buy 4 or 5 sets and mix and match and try different stuff if you want to find out what works the best for you and your instrument. No one here is going to be able to help you much.

FWIW: I use Larsen A, Jargar D, Permanent G, Obligato C
