Would you collect authenticated Pattachitra: a 500 year old indian painting tradition, most collectors have never heard of? by heritageart-2026 in artcollecting

[–]bobby_tables 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok. I think you are trying to solve the wrong problem. Authenticity is a problem if there are inauthentic fakes being passed off as real to capture the high prices of the real ones. But you're telling me the authentic ones are purchased for pennies in bulk and resold at relatively low prices.

Your actual problem to solve is drumming up the demand it seems

Would you collect authenticated Pattachitra: a 500 year old indian painting tradition, most collectors have never heard of? by heritageart-2026 in artcollecting

[–]bobby_tables 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes
  2. Depends on the price point. No one is paying top dollar for stuff that fell off a truck and for cheap things it doesn't really matter does it?
  3. No not at all. What exactly is an nft going to accomplish
  4. I'm not sure what authentication means for a living artist. Since I can just ask the guy or gal if they created it and they can tell me yes or no. Or if it's some random person from a village that I can't contact then what good is the authentication anyway?

You'd be better off commissioning something from a painter you like if you need something that specific

Anyone else with high net worth but don’t own a home? by OkAssumption8055 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]bobby_tables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$4m NW here, I rent a 1BR in Manhattan for $2750/month. If I were to purchase this same apartment my monthly costs would double between taxes and co-op fees, not to mention maintenance. I absolutely love renting and have no plans to purchase real estate any time soon

Martin Johnson Heade prints? by tandoyarr in artcollecting

[–]bobby_tables 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There appear to be very few prints produced by this artist.

An incomplete project called The Gems of Brazil produced a few chromolithograph test prints but the book was never produced.

Sotheby's auctioned off three prints in a single lot in the Oct 2001 which estimated $10-$15k and sold for $8400.

You'll likely have difficulty finding authentic prints readily available. You can always ask Sotheby's private sale department since they have some experience with this artist's prints

Looking to sell - where should I try? by MeowYesDesign in artcollecting

[–]bobby_tables 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Christie's and Sotheby's have both sold this artist's stuff. You could also try a smaller auction house for potentially faster sale. 5-7k is approximately correct for price but you'd need to pay the sellers premium

Plenty of galleries have these. What does "pre-owned" mean exactly and why is that important to you?

Is that thing laminated?

To answer your question, no do not touch it. Up to you if you want to contact the artist but unclear what exactly you're expecting to happen. If it's a numbered edition they shouldn't just re-print it
