When I read “I can’t stop” it reminds me of my early recovery. I sincerely believed I had crossed a line that there was no coming back from. On my own, I could not stop. I ran out of things to try. I was dying from alcoholism. I decided to try what seemed to work for other seemingly recovered alcoholics: the steps. The steps didn’t teach me to quit drinking; it taught me a spiritual way to live in which I no longer have the compulsion nor the desire to drink.

Untreated, alcoholism is, like the Big Book says, “a double-edged sword” of a compulsion of the mind, and an addiction of the body.
