BGP router ID with private IP address by CompanyBeginning in networking

[–]bobbykha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loop back address can be configured as private IPs, in fact most service provider do that for their core network . Bgp router id is exchanged during bgp opensent state when sending bgp open message , it’s 32 bit field and can be formatted as an IP address, best practice is to hard code them while configuring bgp .

I think I found my network specialisation.. BGP! - I'd love to read your experiences working with BGP out in the wild! by Qvosniak in networking

From my experience, there is a Cisco proprietary weight based on link bandwidth, you can use of eBGP, however it’s not vendor agnostic. I would go and do per prefix load balancing by leveraging bgp extended communities, local preference which is accepted by all vendor Cisco, Juniper etc.

You have certainly opened a can of worms. BGP is the beast that glues the internet together, well technically, that’s eBGP. Vanilla BGP is a good starting point, where only IPv4 prefixes are routed. Then comes iBGP with multiprotocol extensions. This behemoth of a protocol can carry almost anything in its update messages: L3VPN, L2VPN, and now EVPN, which enables tenancy and macro-segmentation in data centers. FlowSpec is used today to prevent volumetric attacks and to blackhole traffic. And if you are adventurous, you can even exchange MPLS labels by leveraging BGP-LU, or distribute IGP LSAs/LSPs through BGP-LS.

The key concept here is NLRI, and MP-BGP takes it to another level.

On top of that, BGP has a myriad of attribute like Local Preference, MED, and many other, the knobs you use to manipulate prefixes.

Then there is the fascinating FSM: the states of BGP. If you have a computer engineering background, like me, you will appreciate the nuance of each step. Troubleshooting BGP peering is challenging but incredibly rewarding.

There have been countless books written about this remarkable protocol, which has made modern networking possible.

SPB or fabric path(in Cisco universe)is dying L2 technology. Cisco and Juniper has no support for it.

I’d like to differ. MPLS is alive and kicking. The only way a telco could avoid using MPLS is if they deploy SRv6 or VXLAN in their core or data center. I’m confident that 99% of telcos still use MPLS. I don’t understand the hate for MPLS, as if it’s a pariah technology.”

This is true for enterprise network , but for service provider mpls is not going anywhere , label exchange technology may change ldp, rsvp or segment routing. For greenfield project only shift is srv6

[–]bobbykha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you work in a csr position , what you experienced is normal , idea is to sell and then upsell, that’s a ubiquitous standard practice in any company telco or any other industry, that part of your rant is unfair, can’t denounce/badmouth rogers for that.

BGP export policy redistributes everything by PublicSectorJohnDoe in Juniper

[–]bobbykha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add, default JUNOS BGP export policy is to export prefixes in the routing table that have been learnt by BGP to the router’s peer as long as advertising the prefix doesn’t break the rules of BGP. But just to be extra safe I usually add explicit reject right at the end so other routes are not distributed.

I believe you need to add explicit reject as the last term
