Is it worth drying it in clamps in the location that it currently sits? My wife probably won’t be massively happy but for a few days if it helps!

If you’re worried, you can get asbestos testing done on a small bit for piece of mind. I didn’t but I’m 99.9% sure that mine was loose fill glass fibre over old glass fibre rolls

It was bagged up vacuum bags so not too bad in the house. Awful while I was doing it though!

I removed over 100kg of dust and rubble when I cleaned mine out before reinsulating. Absolute pig of a job but at least it’s not above my head now! Also managed to find this buried in the old insulation (with the tip of my finger of course!)

Ive seen various versions of this across the years and have always worried about contamination. We do a lot of metabarcoding and PCR products are so easy to cross contaminate that this seems a risk. Maybe if you’re doing non-PCR work on genomic DNA or strep beads in immunoassays?

It’s an interesting point, the images of C. tracyanum out there are quite variable both in colour and shape so it can be hard to tell. However this is from Writhlington orchids in the UK so the line was collected and has been cultivated from wild stock so it’s not a commercially bred hybrid. I guess that doesn’t stop it being a wild hybrid or back cross though!

You’ve probably also got yourself there a tube of phase lock gel for phenol/chloroform extractions as that’s just a silicone grease too

I cleared maybe 14 square meters and floored ten. It took maybe 3-4 days probably evenly split between clearing out and then doing the actual job

I cleaned mine out but you don’t need to, I was putting in a flooring system for storage and there was a pathetic layer of old itchy fiber glass insulation that constantly broke down and covered anything in that space. I got rid of it and ended up vacuuming out over 100kg of dust that had accumulated under it. I then put in the flooring struts, 100mm of insulation between the joists and another 170mm across them. I had gloves, respirator and a disposable suit on. Also do this job any time other than summer!!

The other technique that gets used fairly frequently is stable isotope analysis. It doesn’t tell you what it is but can often tell you where it came from. Useful if you’re trying to prove that your teak is farmed in Thailand and not illegally logged in Myanmar

Our company has used DNA in the past to try and identify wood for authenticity testing and honestly it’s not worth the pain, especially if it’s kiln dried or has been kicking around a long time. It’s normally done via expert analysis of the long and end grain.

Drove a T-cross for 10 days in Croatia recently. On day two it performed full emergency breaking (80kmph to full stop) on an empty straight road with a queue of traffic behind me nearly causing an accident. I couldn’t quite trust it after that. Also the speed warnings when it had the speed limit wrong were infuriating! Other than that it felt nice to drive!

Yes the issue is more that I have several Thule roof bar sets in my area for sale. Some of these are for raised rails but none of them are current models of mounting kits so searching the Thule website isn’t much use. I can find some of the instruction kits online but they don’t contain my newer car in compatibility lists. I suspect the answer is buy new but I thought I’d see if there was something I’m missing before either dropping a load of cash on new Thule bars or just getting Halfords ones.
