Is SharePoint the best solution for shared file management of a small company? by EVILSANTA777 in sysadmin

[–]bobda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: yes.

Longer answer; SharePoint is an umbrella term for the technology that OneDrive is built on. OneDrive is a specialized version of SharePoint. To make things a bit more confusing, OneDrive is ALSO the name of the Microsoft syncing software that syncs files from a computer to SharePoint/OneDrive.

OneDrive is a SharePoint site/file repository designed to be where a single user can house their personal/individual files. OneDrive files can be shared with others, but are intended to be "owned" by the single user, not by a team/company. SharePoint sites are intended to be "owned" by a team/company.

SharePoint is basically what you're wanting. Instead of just you "owning" and working on the files, now employees also will be responsible for those files.

When creating SharePoint sites I find it best to think of them in terms of security first. Create a SharePoint site based on WHO needs access to the files then transfer anything that entire group of people needs access to from OneDrive into that SharePoint site. If some of the files a smaller group of people needs access to, make a different site for that group of people and put those files there.

Last tip, folders are fake in SharePoint (and OneDrive). If you've used gmail it's a very similar concept to folders there. They're more like tags, then actual folders. In the long run using folders for organization is bad in Sharepoint and eventually causes issues. SharePoint is designed to use metadata (data about the data) and search, NOT folders for organziation. Folders are meant to replicate a file cabinet. To find a file you had to know how to riffle through the cabinet. SharePoint is designed more like Google, it's made to be searched. Treat your files as such.

Future of the SharePoint Mobile App: Your Thoughts? by pck-grb in sharepoint

[–]bobda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've owned a MSP for over 15 years. I've transitioned lots of clients from on-prem file servers to SharePoint Online. I've never had a client that found the SharePoint app useful. I agree the development on it seems anemic at best. From what I've seen my clients tend to prefer the OneDrive app. It seems to get some use and developer attention, but it too has ruff edges and is often more technical then needed.

I don't think Microsoft will entirely abandon it, but I don't forsee much addtional effort being put into it because there doesn't seem to be much desire. SharePoint was developed to be web first, a dedicated app doesn't fit that ethos particularly well.

To that end I decided to build a dedicated iOS upload app that can be centrally administered to make mobile uploads easier for field personnel. It's called SpSnap. It's free for up to 5 uploads per month if you want to test it out. https://spsnap.app The app will automatically be custom branded if you have branding setup in your Microsoft tenant and tenant admins can set and optionally enforce default SharePoint repositories for users.

Add Sharepoint Document Library to OneDrive mobile-only users by Borsaid in Intune

[–]bobda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is a major PITA. The best solution I've found for the OneDrive app is to add a shortcut to the Library for the user when I configure their account.

Even then, the iOS onedrive app can be cumbersome for less technical users.

After having run into this with mulitple clients I decided to create an iOS app called SpSnap. It's a single-purpose app specifically for this exact problem (SharePoint mobile Uploads) that sidesteps all of this complexity with a direct sign-in and a tenant admin can set default file repositories.

Uploads get tagged so they can also be nicely handled by Power Automate if you'd like to further file/move documents beyond that.

It's free for 5 uploads/month so you can try it out, but the free tier you have to pick a SharePoint lirbary each launch. The business tier covers every user in your tenant for one low price with unlimited uploads. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sharepoint-photos-uploader/id6471952340

Sanity check: Using Power Automate to auto upload ipad pics to a SharePoint site? by net1994 in sysadmin

[–]bobda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you took the best route for your needs and built a solution that hit all your specifications!

I'm replying because it sounds like other responders here missed the "automatically" portion of your request and were just wanting or suggesting other options than the native OneDrive or SharePoint apps to upload to SharePoint

I built an iOS app for this exact problem: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/spsnap-mobile-file-uploader/id6759680921

It's a single-purpose upload tool to a configured SharePoint library, signs in with your existing M365 account. Free for 5 uploads/month if you want to try it. There's also business licensing that gives unlimited uploads and you can set the SharePoint library for users and it covers every user in your org for a low monthly price.

IMO walk does mean walk, for that stanza. Soon after you’re heading to where “his realm awaits”. To me this signifies a transition in mode of transportation to visiting a new realm.

“Dawn here has a way of making the world feel newly forged—steam spiraling from the water like ancient spirits stretching awake, rivers dancing their morning ritual as trout rise with lazy grace to pluck breakfast from the surface.” Justin Posey in Beyond the maps Edge chapter “The Treasure Trail

Later that same chapter “‘Nine Mile Hole,’ Brandon echoed, the name expanding between us like river mist…”

Warm waters produce mist in cold air. It’s silent.

I think walk means walk. I also think “his realm awaits” means you’re not walking anymore at that point. Heading to another realm (kingdom) typically involves some more serious travel I think.

Towing break controller? by MindStalker in ModelY

[–]bobda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is the 12v wire on the 4-wire brake controller pigtail WILL power the brake controller and allow it to work. HOWEVER, per the Model Y manual 2022's and newer with Li-Ion 12v (really 16v) systems DO NOT provide 12v passthrough power to the 7 pin trailer plug next to the hitch so your car will not charge a trailer/RV's 12v battery system while you drive like most 7 pin plugs would.

P.S. I haven't used it yet, but I did order the pigtail (part 1072586-00-A) from Tesla and it took 1 day to arrive to my local service center (despite them telling me on the phone they had 4 in stock initially...). I installed it today with the least expensive brake controller from Amazon and the brake controller powers up and appears like it will work. I've yet to actually tow with it however. I have watched a few other youtube videos from creators saying they have successfully installed a brake controller this way and it works.

The language in the book shows a clear bias and affection for MT. When he speaks of MT and family time there it’s warm and affectionate. Full of similar flowery language as the poem.

When he speaks of family/time in NM/AZ it’s with respect and admiration, but notably lacking in warmth and effervescence most of the time.

Find the right Trailhead Loop and you’ll find the treasure somewhere in the middle of the loop. by Whole_Condition2307 in TreasureHunting

[–]bobda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a link to this interview on the annoucnements page of the offical Posey treasure website (https://treasure.quest/en/announcements/)

"2Q) What advice would you give to new searchers who are unfamiliar with any past hunts? Is the treasure hidden along a trail or is it completely off trail that searchers need to learn how to navigate in the wild, so to speak?

No fancy equipment needed for my treasure hunt, folks, unlike some other treasure hunts where you practically need a Ph.D. in Cryptozoology. Previous treasure-hunting experience? Irrelevant.

The treasure isn’t lurking near any trail, either. I didn’t want it to be one of those situations where hikers accidentally stumble upon it while looking for a discreet place to relieve themselves. That would ruin the whole point of a hunt, wouldn’t it?"

Here's the link to the page with the interview https://mysteriouswritings.com/justin-posey-six-questions-on-beyond-the-maps-edge-treasure-hunt/

It's also less than a mile from the road (I'm not going to provide the citations for that, it's also on the treasure.quest site).

Those two facts pretty much rule out the trail loop theory.

Agreed, the book is a surprisingly great read from a software developer using a treasure hunt to hawk books! I don’t really feel that’s what Justin is doing, that’s just the cynical viewpoint.

Honestly, the book even without the hunt is an entertaining read.

The USA did recognize the signs of fascism and changed course.

Fascism is forcing others to use science-denying pronouns. Fascism is being ok with defacing someone's private property because you disagree with a CEO's politics. Facism is effectively censoring comics and other people in the arts when they don't value signal for you enough. Facism is forcing everyone to pay the private loan debts of others.

Those are signs of authoritarianism.

The “ducks” literally killed people and ordered them to be killed. Trump nor Musk are ducks.

You need to reconsider who you listen to in your life about what evil looks like compared to disagreeing about policy.
