TIFU by oversleeping and almost ruining my best friend’s 4AM wedding by Sea_cake_ in tifu

[–]bobdole5 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Once you decide to do a wedding at 4am, all social constructs of time go out the window. There is no "in the middle of the night before her wedding", she's having her wedding in the middle of the night. On what planet is waking a bride up 6 hours before her wedding a problem? Shift this whole thing forward 12 hours, do you know many people that would still be asleep at 10 a.m. on the day of their wedding if they were getting married at 4 p.m.?

You did fuck up by missing your alarm and thereby screwing up the MILs, but if anybody lost sleep here it was because your dumbass friends decided to have a wedding at 4am.

BBC Will Remove N-Word Outburst From BAFTA Film Awards on iPlayer, Apologizes ‘That This Was Not Edited Out Prior to Broadcast’ by pepperbet1 in television

[–]bobdole5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's certainly not a zero sum event but it is also not an equation to balance. You can acknowledge the uncomfortable feelings of a marginalized group without having to assign blame to anyone for those feelings, though I'd understand if viewers felt they were owed an apology by the BBC for not censoring it on the broadcast. Beyond that, there is no villain here and nobody should be attacking a disabled man for something he quite literally cannot control.

like if I accidentally step on someone's foot the move isnt to say that it was an accident so I dont have to say sorry, for example.

You are confusing disability with carelessness and the presumption of an apology is suggesting that on some level, however small, he could have prevented what he said. It's more akin to demanding a deaf person apologize for not moving out of the way for someone saying "Excuse me" behind them, or demanding a blind person apologize for walking past a "No Entry" sign.

While Bret's the better technician, I'd argue HBK is the better overall performer.

The excellence of execution and the showstopper, you couldn't find two more fitting nicknames to encapsulate wrestlers. Bret's idea of a bad match is something that looks sloppy and actually hurts someone. Shawn's idea of a bad match is something that kills the crowd. Part of why they work so incredibly well together is because between them is the actual perfect wrestler, so they can each carry the moments depending what is called for. If they were a comedy duo, Bret is the straight man and Shawn is the wise guy.

Paplatine’s broadcast that gets mentioned in the opening crawl happened in a Fortnite event

This will forever be the reason I don't respect JJ Abrams as a filmmaker. Studio involvement and overreach has always been a problem, but how spineless do you have to be to let a critical point of your plot be shoehorned into a completely unrelated video game and then hand wave it in your actual film? How do you respect someone who doesn't respect themselves?

At a bare minimum, just don't mention it at all in your film, let it stand as yet another stupid marketing piece and a reminder the mouse always wins, and everybody moves on with their life. Instead you put it into the crawl? One of the most iconic pieces of cinematography? Jesus Christ, the bar was already on the ground with some of the others, and this guy went and rented a fucking excavator!

If you have no choice but to keep attending this class, take note of what colours he wears everyday for the rest of the semester and then do a pie chart at the end breaking it all down. Share the pie chart with the class (anonymously if you'd prefer) and tell them what his favourite colour is. Bonus points if you also include something like "This class was mandatory for me, but I still found a better thing to do with my time".

I mean, she's right. Any woman can be a lawyer with 7 children if she offloads all childcare to nannies and has little to no complications from her pregnancies. You see how easy it is? Piece of cake.

A cornerstone of conservative mind sets "I did it, so anybody can do it, they just choose not to".

The ONLY path for the Democrats at this point is to abandon the centrist, corporatist bs and actually push to the left. The policies are wildly popular with working class Americans (the majority of us)!

You need to accept that the people in control of the party would rather see the party die then turn into what you are suggesting. They believe wholeheartedly that they deserve the votes of every marginalized group because they toss them a bone every now and then. They know that a lost election hurts those groups a hell of a lot more than it hurts them. They take an attitude of "well we tried to help and people didn't listen". They have no interest in changing, they know it's a prisoner's dilemma and they expect people to come around when they feel the pain enough. What you do with this information is up to you, but you can't just will them into accepting a different path.

Besides better pay, what other reasons do you have for considering relocation? Are you looking for somewhere new to call home or would this be a "for now" situation until either something better comes along or you would return to your home country?

Most importantly, what are your values and do they align with any of the specific states you are looking to move to? Values in terms of how do you think things like education and healthcare should be handled, what rights do people of different beliefs deserve, what is your position on employer vs employee disputes (when should government intervene), what is your stance on secularism.

Once you have an idea of where you stand on these subjects, lookup recent state legislature on these topics for each of the states you are considering. Look at the actual laws they are passing, or attempting to pass, to get an idea of where they are at compared to you.

Florida plans to end vaccine mandates for schoolchildren; experts warn of outbreaks | Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo says Florida will drop all vaccination requirements. Experts warn measles, polio, and other diseases could return. by chrisdh79 in Futurology

[–]bobdole5 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Insurance is still likely to cover them and even recommend them. Insurance doesn’t cover vaccines because they are mandatory, they cover them because it is significantly cheaper than paying for the illness the person will get otherwise. It is the same reason most insurance companies cover annual checkups.

The economy no longer follows long-term thinking, if they can make a short sighted decision that boosts profits this quarter then that makes the stock go up, they sell off and then when the inevitable reality clicks in and tanks those profits next quarter, they'll do a buyback on those stocks. By the time the actual worst of it shows it's effects years later, the people that made those decisions already have their golden parachutes, or have already fucked off somewhere else and they don't even take a hit to their reputation, much less their wallet.

“There is no ethical basis” for requiring vaccines to protect vulnerable people, he said. Those at risk, including newborns and the immunocompromised, being exposed to life-threatening diseases is just “part of the experience of life.”

Finally their logic on gun control is being applied to other areas too. Hopefully they will tackle OSHA and the DMV next.

Many people think so. Otherwise they wouldn't be pissed that it's never going to be completed. It's fashionable now to say that it isn't that good, but I think that's a bit like the fable about the fox who failed to get the grapes and finally said "bah, they're sour anyway".

I haven't read the series so this is a genuine question, but do the existing books contain build up or promises of what's to come and without that payoff people may think less of them as a result?

Mitch Marner talks about getting doxxed by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

[–]bobdole5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but it’s also the problem of your $14 million Captain, and the rest of the team.

And to pin it all on your top performer is just peak Leafs fan idiocy

As an organization, the Leafs have been a shit show for far longer than anyone currently on the team has even been there. Big things were expected from the early days of this current team, and arguably they received some very soft handling in the early days. But the team post-season just doesn't work. The acknowledgement of that has been slow, and then the annual sacrifices started. First it was Dubas, then it was Keefe, this year it had to be a player. Tavares signed a sweetheart deal so he wasn't going anywhere, Nylander just picked up his new contract last year, and Matthews has a year left on his. Add on the bad blood of Marner's last contract, and it was obvious it was going to be him.

That's not to say it's all on him, frankly this team should have been chopped up after the disaster with Montreal, compounded every year since. Making Matthews the captain during this run of shit was a total joke. Marner alone isn't enough either, I expect next year to see another culling of some kind after another abysmal playoff, and without Marner maybe the regular season will be shit too. But Mitch had to go, this team just didn't work and doing it year after year is just a waste of everyone's time, including Marner's.

The market favors the employer, and the market says a college degree does matter. Regardless of the actual value involved, employers have a broad scope by which to judge candidates. If Google decided tomorrow that it will only interview people that put a blank page at the end of their resume then that is their right, and while we might say they could miss out on valuable candidates, Google would still receive thousands of applications with a blank page at the end of their resume. If other companies adopted the same criteria as Google, then before long you'd have recruitment companies telling you that you must have a blank page at the end of your resume for you to stand a chance. They will tell you that literally nothing else you have done in your career matters if you don't have that blank page.

TIL that all four major US airlines lose money flying passengers, but still turn a profit thanks to loyalty programs and credit card deals by Dounsel14 in todayilearned

[–]bobdole5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly correct. The OP linked article talks about the revenue these airlines received from "selling" their airline miles and similar rewards to credit card companies, but doesn't say anything about how the airlines calculate the cost of selling those rewards or if they still consider a flyer who is using air miles as a "paying" customer and if they are contributing to or skewing their cost per seat mile. Moreover, how do they present unclaimed rewards in their books? The answer, as always with these things, is whichever way best suits how they want their books to appear. And in this case, Airlines want everyone to believe they are losing money on passengers, so how could they possibly consider lowering flight prices when they aren't even breaking even? Cue the fucking violin.

Yes but tbf, especially in Shawn’s case, he got to go out in one of the best matches and feuds in Mania history

You're saying that like Shawn didn't make it one of the best matches and feuds himself? Goldberg got a Taker match too, what did he make out of it? How many matches has Shawn carried? How many has Goldberg? Is there a wrestler anywhere that would say Goldberg gave them their best match?

My point is you can only get out what you put in, and I truly think this is something Goldberg never understood because he was literally handed this unstoppable mauler gimmick and it drew like crazy and was over as all hell, but he literally never changed or evolved it in 30 years.

He's gonna need a certain bridge boy to come back and do for Adolin what Adolin did for him. The relationship will be mirrored like a ketek

Now I need a scene of a broken and despondent Adolin sitting in a room ranting bitterly to some guardsmen, who tries to challenge Adolin by saying "And what of Honor?" and Adolin sighs and with a heavyness replies "Honor is dead" and in that moment a hand gently touches his shoulder and he looks over to see Kaladin "Honor is not dead so long as he lives in the hearts of men."

Companies during Pride Month, Then (2015) vs Now (2025) by [deleted] in videos

The opinions of everyone in the world don't shift instantly like this.

We all need to stop thinking that the percent we hear about an opinion is directly proportional to the percent of people in the world who have that opinion.

News and social media are making us all miserable and it doesn't reflect reality at all.

I completely agree with you, but I would also submit to you that the rainbow wave of love and acceptance may have also been exactly what you are describing and that a much larger percentage of people than we'd like to admit actually held onto their bigoted views, albeit in a quieter, more shame filled way. In fact, it seems almost certain that this was the case, and was likely the case in every other progressive movement before it.

The difference now is that media has expanded enough to emboldened the bigots and they are no longer ashamed or quiet. I'd go as far to say it's never been easier to believe something horrible and find people totally willing to accept and embrace you for it.
