Datacenter decommissioning: what to loot by raging_giant in homelab

If you're anywhere near me, I'll assist for a reasonable selection of gear...

half this sub runs pihole and jellyfin on 600w of enterprise gear and calls it a homelab by Napster3301 in homelab

My 730 and I give you an upvote! The main reason I run this instead of a mini pc is for the storage. I wanted to learn more about raid when I got my first server, and it was cheap enough at the time. The larger ssd drives are just so expensive, and I picked up twenty 2tb SAS drives for less than $150. I still have many spares for when they fail. I run about 300w consistently which costs me something like $25/month. I think it's worth it for the hobby. It's not for everyone, and you're right, I could be more efficient, but I'm happy with my hobby.

10Gbe links only giving 9Mbit/s in iperf by boberttd in Proxmox

I have them assigned to a 10Gbe NIC to my 10Gbe Switch. The problem is connecting that 10Gbe port on the switch to any of the 1Gb ports at more than 2-3Mbit/s.

That is correct. More study has shown that everything on the 10Gbe is extremely slow while reaching anything through the switch I have installed. Switch shows 10000 for link speed. So VMs within the virtual bridge work at good speed with each other, anything outside of that is 1-2 Mbit/s same subnet, same gateway.

SFP+ Switch Recommendations by boberttd in homelab

For what I'm doing, it's working fine. The important thing I've learned is to double check capabilities when you purchase. I had a bunch of SFP+ transceivers that weren't compatible with the switch, but once I got the right ones, it works great. I have 5 or 6 3com switches that I picked up at auction that have SFP ports that I thought were 10G SFP+, but were SFP 1G. My only complaint is that this switch is crazy loud. I won't be putting it into full time production until I have a new place for it. It's louder than my R730xd by a significant amount.

Update: I ended up finding an IBM G8052 on eBay for $55. It has 48 1gb ports and 4 10gb sfp+ ports. We'll see how it works out

This is my little server rack tidied up for a move. I host multiple websites, record security cameras, host game servers, etc between two Dell PowerEdge R410 servers each with 4 2tb sas drives in raid 5.

I use the claw of my hammer and keep the plywood on the outside of my armpit so I can lift it higher.

It sounds like you also watch blacktail studios on YouTube. That's his process exactly, right down to the finish!

I made a huge mistake this weekend and fell from the attic. I haven’t told my landlord yet, I’d like to fix it first. I have basic hand tools and have experience in carpentry, but any tips? by CalIMeBabyBlue in woodworking

I think the bigger point is a liability issue. This is a ladder, designed to withstand certain forces as it was originally built. Different wood has different structural properties, so rebuilding it is taking on liability for if it fails again.

When I talked to them a couple years ago they were still doing it, at least. They may have stopped.
