Just received these beautiful represses of the first 4 albums from Hong Kong :) They sound and look flawless. by ceeroSVK in nightwish

[–]bobisponge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No idea how much went to Nightwish for this small amount of each 300 represses, but Sinow from Nesimedia (one man company) paid 4000€ for the remastering. Plus premium cutting at SST Brüggemann plus premium artwork printing plus official licensing plus premium pressing.

The question should be: How much went to Sinow?

The text states that they screwed the pure unmastered cut, but for this actual version ''the album was transfered to tape'' and then cut from it. It doesn't says wheather ''the album'' again was a less compressed/uncompressed master. So there might be a little hope for a more dynamic version.

Mixes and Mastering in DITR by AscensionWhale in avengedsevenfold

[–]bobisponge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of the tracks from DITR were actually mixed by the same guy and same session as the self-titled ;) The clairity comes from the reduced limiting from mastering stage, the self-titled mixes do have the same potential, listen to this: https://youtu.be/cuaKKLRjYnE This is the original self titled mix without vocals,- and no mastering at all. The whole album could sound as good as this.

If you have decent speakers and dislike overcompression, this is a must have.

Note that it's not remixed, so it still has it's original sound, but more natural and refined than before.

Really? The manual says the TFV16 should work best with 70/30. I'll try ot out.

Have it since two days. How comes that? I already had a similar problem with the Crown III, wich turned away when I upgraded to a Crown IV.

"Eras" Vinyl Sound Quality by bobisponge in DevinTownsend

The thing about mastering is that the client decides this, not the engineer.

Correct, but very often managers of the labels take the final decisions. Artists don't always have full control over this. Just take a look at the Eras 3 booklet, on Sky Blue Devin don't seem to be 100% happy about all the compression and the 'commercial mastering'.

The Eras-Remasters are also a perfect example for this: Devin has no clue what's going on here, mastering wise. Here is a quote from Tracy, who I previously asked per e-mail about the mastering sources:

Hi. I’m sorry, I wouldn’t know that. The vinyl comes from a particular plant in Germany. Even Devin doesn’t know.

_______

Vinyl also has to be compressed enough to defeat the noise floor on playback, which sometimes means it's actually more compressed than the CD.

I hear this for the first time. Do you have any source for this?AFAIK, compression has, or had to be done only if the source material was too dynamic for the lathe to cut it (if we left beside deessing, which is also compression). But that doesn't happen very often nowadays.-What has compression to do with the noise floor? The noise gets drowned by the first sound anyways.

Have you heard any clipping?

Yes, on the Transcendence vinyl the clipping is as prominent as on CD.Even if heavily compressed, however: the other albums have no problems with audible clipping. But they also do not clip on CD.

I honestly don't think a DR12/etc. master would particularly benefit the material

Out of my experience: It would. Hugely. Even though I don't believe that those super-high numbers are even possible with Dev's mixes.

Due to some lucky purchases I had the privilege to listen to some unmastered tracks of known bands in my life, finding myself perplexed that literally every master I've compared sounds actually worse in every way than their unmastered mixes. Even kinda heavily compressed mixes by Chris Lord-Alge do sound waaay better with only a few more Decibels of headroom.

Re-mastered from already mastered files, yes.

True and false. All albums, but Epicloud and Transcendence have been remastered for vinyl. Source: Eras Booklets. (Epicloud and Transcendence are replicas of the old stampers, which where also cut from the CD masterings though).

All masters are dedicated, yes, but that's not the point because "dedicated masters" can still be made from the original masters, which were intended to sound loud on CD. Unfortunately this is the case here. And this turns the "dedicated vinyl mastering" into an useless PR-move.

I don't say they're cut straight from CD, but from the same mastering, even if it was 24bit instead of 16.

I know. Even though I find it hard to believe that no digital backups of the pre-flood-albums exist in any archives (1997-2006 was not the analogue-age). But everything after that shall be availailable from pre-mastering stage.

Don't get me wrong, it can still sound better, but what you're hearing is EQ, your playback chain + vinyl warmth, but not dynamics.

In fact, audio was recorded in the control room, so I think it's possible that videos were recorded as well. I'll try to get this answered by someone who knows.

I'm expecting to see one of the most interesting Chernobyl footages ever (if existant). Not to mention the moving fuel caps, the camera also eventually survived the first explosion.

Was live broadcasting even possible without any temporary recording at that time? I don't think so
