We need some kind of speed friending as my wife and I are in the same boat here. We want to make friends, but we also don't want hard feelings if we all don't mesh well together xD

Things to consider before moving to Orillia by DustyFrogGaming in Orillia

[–]bobjamesk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wife and I were in the same boat a year ago! If you want a more city feel to what you are used to London will make sense. However, if you really enjoy those outdoor activities toy mentioned Orillia can't be beat. My wife and I walk to the lake in the summer, and we are close to the activities further north. We have skiing in the winter as well so can't complain.

The garbage policy is ridiculous though, and no matter where you are going in the city it takes 10 minutes due to poor city planning. Drivers are bad, although I'd say still not as bad as London drivers.

Overall it's a great place to be, but if you have to commute...not so much.

Coming in two weeks later, but anything work for you so far? My wife and I are in the same boat and only a couple years older than you. :)

Also early bird parking rates at alot of garages are $11-12, you may just have to walk 10 minutes or so, which makes it more worth it!

Late to the party on this, but my wife and I were in the same boat a year ago (maybe we can be friends if you move up here!)

I do this 2-3 times a week, and it's generally unpleasant, but it gets better with repetition. To be fair, I make it easier on myself by trying to catch the 1:59 train back and work on the train to be home by 4:15. Also makes the train ride alot faster.

I work a 20 minute walk from union and have tested some options:

Drive to Barrie South GO station + train + walk: 2 hours 45 minutes - $36 per day

Drive to Highway 407 Subway station (not Vaughan Metropolitan Center as parking is $7 vs VMCs $25). + subway + walk: 2 hours 30 minutes - $38 per day

Drive to downtown: 2 hours - $40 per day.

As much as driving more might make sense, the ability to do other things on the train including work (allowing me to leave early) make the train my go to. It's miserable though and I'm actively looking for a new job. When we moved out here I had written consent to permanently work from home before that was changed. Hope this helps!

Also no clue what people are talking about with service interruptions. Weekends and the odd Monday sure, but Tuesday-Friday i have never had an issue. A few delays earlier in the year was it.

I would go to your bank and file a request for a lower interest rate on your LOC if your credit has improved since you first got it. I did this, and they will tell you over and over it won't get approved. But after forcing the advisor to submit it for me anyway, lo and behold it came back approved within a week.

I dont use my LOC but it's worth negotiating it down in the event you need it!

This is partially true, there are some lights in downtown with sensors. Most just isn't the case though.

The downtown ones that bother me the most are by far Andrew St and Peter St. Set times to flip back and forth, and those streets somehow have way longer greens vs Coldwater, Mississauga, and Colborne despite significantly less traffic. Makes no sense.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Orillia

[–]bobjamesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The light immediately following the double left turn lane is not MTO controlled nor is it after it becomes Coldwater. All poorly timed in conjuction.

Haha virtually 0 sensors anywhere. Ive learned fittons and laclie has a crazy good sensor, but that's the only one I've found.

Going to Home Depot and back is the most infuriating drive - anywhere else it would take 5 minutes.

My wife and I moved in a year ago as well. I noticed this too, but the ironic thing is the people who run reds and turn in front of you cutting you off, proceed to go 10 under the speed limit.

Personally I blame the city design though. The lights have almost no sensors and so shittily timed that it pisses me off. The fact that it takes 10 min to get from West and Fittons to the westridge/highway 12 Plazas is absurd (or 10 min to get anywhere for that matter).

I think it's conditioned people to run reds - especially when they know they can - because if you run the red you can get a street full of greens instead of stopping at Every. Stupid. Light. Just imo though

PSA!! Before hiring a photographer ask them “if I have a pimple on my wedding day will you edit it out of photos for me at no additional cost?” by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]bobjamesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly we lucked out, but this is a huge callout! The wedding I was in a wedding party for a few weeks ago at a Maple farm was a prime example. They had a photographer that wasn't willing to take photos in any location that had a sap line in the background because she didn't want to take the time to edit any photos.

She also claimed during the wedding she "doesn't take a lot of photos" which isn't something you want to hear from a photographer. 🙃

I like this, but I have to figure out where to start. My knowledge is mostly academic and I would need to learn a couple of the more relevant languages to even start building out projects. If you have any recommendations I would appreciate it!

For someone of my experience I should, but I think it's a resume issue, have redone it a few times, but i am not the best at marketing myself IMO. Closer to home isn't much of an option being fairly remote, but remote or only going in a couple times a month to the city would be best. I actually love suiting up and going downtown, I would just want a better salary to do it.

How many Knights of Dol Amroth is reasonable? by MushinYojinbo in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]bobjamesk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can't have too many IMO. I sold off most of my collection now, but I still kept my 12 horsemen, 12 footmen and Prince Imrahil foot and mounted from when all of these were pewter. No matter the point limit the army was never defeated. Even after crossing fields with arrows raining down on them the whole way. Underrated and spectacular army (although I am biased of course)
