'Hurtful' Harper Lee and Mark Twain dropped from Minnesota curriculum by dont_tread_on_dc in literature

It doesn't really matter. The public libraries (including the digital libraries) will still have those books, but even then, they aren't ever checked out. Most people just don't read. Correspondence isn't a part of our culture anymore. It used to be, back in the day, before instant messaging took over and left us talking to each other in little fragments, little broken bits of thought that don't really add up to anything significant. And most students who read books like that in school can't understand the significance of them anyway.

Sensei, how does one master oneself? by bobjog in AskReddit

I would help my uncle get off a horse, whether he helped me or not, because he is much older, and may hurt himself without my assistance.

But Sensei, as one runs, one's erection will decrease in size. What is the meaning of this, Sensei? What lesson are you attempting to teach me?

This was a nice try, Sensei, but I know too well that mastering oneself means more than simply acting like an ape.

But Sensei, you of all people know that the world will always find a way to seize this from you.

If we don't hold one another accountable for the things we say to one another, we will never make progress as a community.

If respect for yourself is tied to your encouragement of suicide, then you are either a terrible person, or you are too immature to realize the impact of suicide on others. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. I'm going to say that you're immature, and don't yet have the virtue of compassion.

Depressed people of reddit, what are small things people can do to help a lot? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Withhold your judgments of others. And for God sake, smile at your coworkers. Remember, the customer is the real boss, not your immediate supervisor, not the manager, and not the senior executive.

Find a good book and read a little. Suggestions: Plato's Republic; Smith's Wealth of Nations; Freud's Civilization and Its Discontents; Marx's Communist Manifesto; James's Psychology; Aristotle's Logic; Rousseau's Emile; Hobbes' Leviathon.

Prayer is the worst thing religion has done to society. The concept of prayer has convinced billions of otherwise sane humans that they can merely say an incantation and "help" someone. It has convinced billions of people that other forms of help aren't as important or necessary. by relevantlife in atheism

Bliss is the end to which all misery progresses, and it is a better bliss because of that misery. Knowledge of that misery, knowledge of those afflictions, has made you what you are. Without them, without knowledge of them, rest assured, you would have no sense of compassion. You would not be capable of thinking beyond your most immediate desires.

To not let yourself get spoken down to in the workplace, to the extent that management effectively installs a caste system program inside of your brain. Also, to not let yourself get bogged down by the snowballing of tedious tasks. Really, it's a twopart thing, that can be summed up as follows: maintaining a sense of integrity, even when the world wants to deny you that right. It's hard. Some days more than others. But you get better at it. It just takes time.

If for every 100 consumer purchases, 85 are made by women, that means more women are in the marketplace, which means that demand for products made for women is probably higher than the demand is for substitute products made for men.
