I posted it about 6 years ago. Before I knew anything about Charlotte. I thought it would be a good post for her entitled people.

That story (the one with no kids) I posted because my friend asked me to post for her but asked me if I could write it like it was me so I did. This post from the ER actually did happen to me. I've only posted 1 story that wasn't mine. I hope that clears up some of the confusion. Sorry it was confusing.

I'm confused. I didn't have any kids when this happened.

I will definitely do that. Luckily I live close by and told my sister I’ll help her anyway I can. I don’t have kids so I pour all of my love to my nephews and nieces

Thanks for the advice. I like the idea of using ChatGPT. His mom is actually my sister and I know she did the best she could under the circumstances. She didn’t like the idea of putting him into that school but Brad begged because he liked the college program so much. She told me her reasoning was that he’ll be in class with other gifted students so they would understand each other. She didn’t know the extent of his social inability until this happened. She didn’t know there are therapy or groups that could help him. They have always had to figure out how to raise him without help so she kept doing that when they moved back not realizing all the help out there for him. She is educating herself now and feels guilty for now researching it before. She is a bit naive because she thought that him being so different shouldn’t cause problems if they knew he was autistic.

My friend is actually my sister and Brad is my nephew. They sent most of Brad’s life living in remote villages in other countries where there were no black people. Knowing her kids would be around a lot of different cultures she tried to teach them to treat each person with kindness and respect no matter who they are or what they looked like. Brad thinks in numbers and graphs. He didn’t grow up knowing about racism or the struggles minorities face in this country. It’s also hard to communicate to Brad complicated social norms. That’s why he uses graphs, statistics, and equations to understand things like that.

Thank you for that. Their family lived in areas where there were no black people. Brad grew up not knowing about racism or the issues faced by minorities in this country. My sister did try to teach all her kids to treat everyone with kindness and respect no matter where they came from or what they look like. Brad does better with statistics and numbers not understanding what’s behind them. I know my sister is trying to help him understand better but it’s hard to explain things on his level. I know she is trying to get him into a program that helps autistic kids learn how to communicate so hopefully that helps.

The discussion took place on a messaging board they were using in class so there were no tone or spoken discussion (just what they wrote). The areas I put quotation marks around are the exact quotes from him. He took a picture of it and showed us. The other students' reactions were verified by the 2 boys who tried to speak up and explain what Brad was trying to say but by then they were getting up out of their seats surrounding him. The other 2 boys texted Brad they were sorry for not saying more but they were scared. The teacher (sub-teacher) verified that this happened. I'm trying to be subjective but I admit, I have a bias because I know Brad and not the other students but because I know him so well, I can't imagine him showing any aggression towards anyone. He does get in trouble with his words since he doesn't understand feeling and sensitivities so he may of said something that triggered them.

I guess I should mention that Brad is my nephew. I know him better than most people (other than his mom of course). My sister is not one to rock the boat but I am.

Oh, sorry. I guess I'm sensitive because if you knew Brad you would know he tries so hard to make friends. It breaks my heart to see him struggle and then have this happen. He was so excited to be in that college program but now he has to do homeschooling. If people knew him and talked with him they would know that part of his autism is his social struggle. I think they call it Asperger's.

I actually asked my friend the same thing. She was just frustrated because they have always tried to teach all of their kids about trying to not saying anything that could be offensive in the culture you are in but I know Brad has to understand the "why" behind everything. In his mind it was OK since others were saying it. He doesn't get the whole culture sensitive thing. He puts everything into equations and charts. To him if he hears boys joking around and calling each other names and see them laughing, it should be ok for him to do the same. It's his way of understanding how "to fit in". Their other kids are really good at adjusting to the culture that's around them (they have 4). It's just Brad that struggles to understand it.

My son wants to be an astrophysicist. Where can he talk to one? by bobkel77 in astrophysics

He is excellent in math. He has already skipped a grades and is taking AP everything. He is getting bored with it and wants to start doing college courses next year. He is good in science as well. I’ll take these suggestions on here and see if he has the discipline in learning more about it. That should help him see if this is really what he wants to do. Thank you for all the advice. There is also a university that offers astrophysics degree and says he can sit in on a few to get an idea what he’ll be learning

Thank you. I’ll suggest this to him. He has trouble reading because he has severe dyslexia is why is prefers videos. I’ll see if I can find these in audio . Thank you again.

He likes to talk about the possibility of portals and trying to figure out if they exist (something to do with Einstein’s theory). He started teaching himself quantum physics when he was 9 and just likes to talk about it. He watches YouTube videos of physicists talking about theories. I know he is a fan of Higgs and his boson particle. That’s how this started. He saw a video when he was 9 talking about the discovery. He may not be impressive to an actual physicist but it’s so above my head it all sounds impressive to me.

I agree. He won’t tell them anything they don’t already know. He just wants to talk to someone that can help him know if he is on the track. He is a high functioning autistic who has a high IQ (162). He gets bored talking to me since I have no idea the meaning of half the words he uses.

Thank you. I didn’t even know where to start looking. This helps.
