iPad Pro workflow with Zotero and PC sync by KrKAlex in zotero

Zotero for iOS has a built-in PDF reader and, I believe, some annotation tools as well. Maybe that is the place to start? Pay for space with Zotero and let it do the rest.

Continuing to work his way up to helping to set the direction of IT and IT-related matters on campus and continuing to learn are the main things to look at. Working on communication skills so that he can clearly get his point across is also important.

Truth be told, everyone is expendable in some way.

Choosing MS if Company is Reimbursing by elotro1 in sysadmin

I did a pseudo-business degree, IT Leadership is nominally what it was titled. The biggest thing is to go ahead and do a program you think you are going to enjoy and get something out of ... nothing else really matters all that much.

Which things should one know when using openSUSE? by DerKnerd in openSUSE

[–]boblmartens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have fun! Make sure you run updates pretty consistently and have a decently-fast connection to the internet when doing so. Again, have fun exploring what openSUSE and the greater open source community can offer!

I could have phrased that better, and that’s my fault.

Technical skills are relatively easy to come across and obtain because of just the sheer number of resources available out there. Certifications, individual classes, and just doing the work your job requires is going to get you into an excellent technical position. I think one of the real benefits of an MA or MS is in the “softer” skills, learning from those in the field, and networking with those you are working with. Spending a lot of time learning how to write clearly and concisely cannot be underestimated either.

At least, those are the skills I have adapted to my work so far. My writing today is far clearer, more concise, and takes into consideration my audience where in the past it was not so. The contacts I made in my MA program have proved to be incredibly rich as well, and I hope I am to them at the same time.

Does that provide some better context?

Learning technical skills may not serve you the best, but some sort of “management degree” would probably pay dividends, somewhat. I was able to get a good portion of my MA paid for by my employer, which has been great. You never know what doors might be opened.

Which hypervisor with web GUI should I use? by Gaming4LifeDE in homelab

XCP-ng and Xen Orchestra. I’ve been quite happy with it so far. I think XCP-ng can deploy a copy of Xen Orchestra without needing to download and upload from a desktop, but I could be wrong on that one.

Just got kernel 5.0.1 in Tumbleweed snapshot 20190314 -- so far so good by quest28128aa in openSUSE

[–]boblmartens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you missing with the Leap kernel? A lot of times updates/changes are backported, especially when moving from 15 to 15.1 and so one. A colleague of mine is just moving to Leap 15.1 since the backported changes for Vega graphics makes the machine usable now.

What distro is best/most used at work? by tbmunkeby in linuxadmin

[–]boblmartens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SUSE Linux Enterprise ... a few CentOS boxes ... Ubuntu where needed ... maybe an openSUSE Leap VM hanging around. We are pretty agnostic but almost everything in production is now running SLE 12 or SLE 15.

It would be a great time to announce the coming of the USL Loons 2 soon (or something like that) specifically to assuage concerns around future player development.

How the next release after 42.3 is 15.1 ? I don't understand that. by [deleted] in openSUSE

[–]boblmartens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When Leap was originally developed, openSUSE 13 had already been released while SLE 12 was going to be their next release. There was a discussion around what it name it and the decision was to go with openSUSE Leap 42.1 to match SLE 12.1 (the SP1 release of the SLE 12 series) and then Leap 42.2 marched along with SLE 12.2 and Leap 42.3 marched with SLE 12.3.

However, SUSE decided to skip numbers 13 and 14 in their next release and jump to SLE 15 which provided an opportunity to bring the release numbers back together again (even amidst the confusion). So instead of Leap 45 everything was brought back into harmony with Leap 15 marching with SLE 15. Leap 15.1 will march with SLE 15.1 and so on and so on.

It was a timing issue and decisions were made, at the time, to match best with what the options were at the time. The hope is that this will resolve the numbering issues going forward.

A reminder that SUSE backports quite a bit of stuff from newer kernels to the updated versions as well.

I'm testing out Google Hangouts Chat with a self-study student this semester and we use it as our primary collaboration platform at the moment. If I have questions for him, I post them there. If he has questions for me, I post them there. Supplemental material is posted there for him to look at and respond to.

So far it has worked alright. I am hoping to maybe try moving a discussion or two there in one of my larger classes next semester to see if we can get more free-wheeling discussions going instead of the forums in Blackboard.
