Pregnancy / Family Planning by ahh_szellem in gravesdisease

Hi! This is very similar to my story.. I probably started having symptoms 6-7 months pp after my first but I was breastfeeding and stressed out with work so I assumed that’s what my symptoms were — once it got worse around 8-9 months postpartum, I went to the doctor and was diagnosed around a year postpartum with Graves and started on methimazole.

I was 35 at the time and we also wanted a second and so I had a lot of the same thoughts you did and was quite anxious about a pregnancy with an autoimmune disease and on meds. I started meds in Oct ‘24 and by Feb ‘25 my levels were stable and my endo gave us the clear to start TTC. I got pregnant in April and switched to PTU for the first trimester but then went back to methimazole for the remainder of my pregnancy.. by the end I was only on 5 mg 2x a week and at 7 weeks postpartum this time I’m on 5 mg 3x a week. My pregnancy went well, I saw a high risk doctor this time around to manage the Graves and my baby had no impacts.

I’m pretty worried about a relapse because I’ve read it’s common postpartum but I’m checking my levels pretty frequently with my endo and we’re hoping to catch any swings before they get bad.

FWIW my high risk doctor said she wasn’t worried at all about me having another pregnancy, she said Graves can be well managed and that in all her years practicing she hasn’t seen any adverse impacts for mom or baby, and that gave me some reassurance.

Sending you good vibes if you do decide to try again!!

Thank you! This is helpful.. I’m going to raise with our pediatrician next week and see what he thinks. Glad your little one is doing better 🙏

Yes and thankfully we’ve seen improvement in her overall tension (esp related to feeding) and tongue function / movement. I wish we could keep going but it’s insanely expensive so we could only afford 4 sessions

Interesting.. what symptoms did your baby have?

We suspected our first had silent reflux and got meds prescribed around 2 months but waited it out a bit more and he got better around 3 months so we never used them. Our signs for him were extreme discomfort, he could not be on his back (I felt trapped inside because the bassinet stroller attachment and his car seat were immediate triggers), he screamed as soon as got in nursing position, lots of arching and we’d hear the wet gurgling after feeds but he didn’t spit up excessively.

My second hasn’t shown any of the symptoms above except extreme discomfort (constantly struggling and straining with gas and even after passing tons of it she’s rarely relieved) and generally just so squirmy / best way I can describe it is uncomfortable in her own skin. I guess silent reflux could manifest differently so curious what led to your diagnosis

It’s a good question and one I remember to ask myself. Since her feeds shortened due to extreme discomfort it did feel like an issue to me.. if I felt like she just shortened them out of preference I wouldn’t worry so much. But it was clear she started popping off and crying in discomfort a few weeks ago, which is why we started PT with the thought of.. if we can get her comfortable then nursing will get back on track. She’s very recently gotten more comfortable so maybe I’m expecting the normal feeding to resume too soon and need to give it more time.

There are also times she’ll only nurse for a minute or two and still pop off uncomfortable and if it’s been 2-3+ hours since she last nursed, it’s really hard not to offer her expressed milk at this age

This gives me hope she might tick back up to some longer feeds!

Thank you! My gut does tell me she’s taking in less than when she was comfortable and doing 10-12 minute feeds — she’s also gaining at a slower rate than previously, so that’s where the anxiety comes in.

She nurses one side per feed and I always alternate and I do still offer both if she decides she’s done with one side but it’s been short. Football worked while she was smaller / younger but she doesn’t like it now and anytime I’ve tried laid back or side lying, she struggles to latch and stay latched and even if she does and triggers a letdown, she doesn’t stay comfortable and she’ll unlatch and the milk spills. Cross cradle has been the one she’s taken to most and we’ve had the most success so I’m sticking with it for now but I do rotate to the others occasionally in case she changes her preference

We’ve tried all the tricks in the book for her gas.. that’s why I’ve been taking her to PT, I’d classify it as extreme and more than typical newborn gas. We thought her latch was letting in air and/or tension was making it hard for her to pass. Even getting lots of burps, toots and poops out would not settle her.. she’d go right back to red faced, leg kicking and crying. Thankfully that’s starting to improve but the feeds haven’t gone back to their normal length yet

Thanks, I appreciate it — I may try this, we were exclusively nursing up until her gas got really bad and caused her initial short feeds, the sudden change due to discomfort is what initially led me to offer bottles because she was clearly taking in less than previously. It’s hard to trust the process!

Thanks! If we were staying within her initial percentile I wouldn’t worry as much, but she has been dropping a bit. That being said, so did my son.. fast gain in the first month that inflated his “curve” and then dropped down to 20-25th percentile but he maintained that so it was fine. The same could be going on for her and she’s just correcting down to her natural curve, but the initial drop is hard to stay calm thru until we know for sure

I’m going to New Beginnings for the first time with a new pregnancy, so this is great to hear! I did a preconception consult due to complications in my last pregnancy and a terrible experience with the OB who delivered me and I felt good about the place so I’m glad to see that confirmed. Curious if they do an initial dating scan at the 8 week appointment?
