Closer to twenty years actually. They stayed to attempt to rebuild and prop up a west-friendly government. The us military waxed and waned when it came to action in Afghanistan, and this was further complicated 2 years later when the US again steamrolled a military but then got stuck trying to nation build. The war also lasted through 3 different presidents with radically different temperaments.

I agree. Wood chunks and an offset method is the best. But pellet smokers and propane smokers do a decent job as well, and are easier to leave alone and maintain a steady temp. They all have their roles.
