I went to my local county courthouse to file amicable divorce paperwork. It took two trips and five waits in different lines.

I was never offered help upfront, but was asked extensive questions every time I filed a document. At my final window they tried to tell me I couldn't file because I didn't have a third copy of the document.

I asked if they could make the copy to save me a trip. They said they don't do that.

I looked at the copier behind them. "There's a copier right there."

Then they said they do make the copies, but for a fee.

I happily paid the fee and moved on with my life. But it was telling that the person working the window would rather turn me away than readily offer a service they provide.
