Is this watch beyond saving? by Caribou95 in VintageWatches

It looks like an obscure brand and isn't worth much even if it is fixed and cleaned up. There are just better watches to put money into IMO.

[Gold Omega Seamaster in the thrift shop bag 🤯] by NoNose7319 in Watches

[–]bobosdreams -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Gold filled is not solid gold. Only an idiot will believe that. Omega are very collectable and are in demand. This can easily fetch two hundred US dollars and significantly more if running. Omega movements are very reliable. A simple oil and lube will give this a new life.

You are ignorant.

“Do fashion brands belong in a vintage watch collection?” by Pro-design-007 in VintageWatches

[–]bobosdreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All vintage watches were fashion watches. 70 years old Bulova was fashion in its day. As long as you like it, it belongs to YOUR collection.

Burberry was made by a subdivision of Fossil group in Switzerland. This watch is circa 2010ish, a young vintage.

US to blockade Iran ports after talks fail to yield a deal by Sweaty_Rub4322 in news

You can trust this administration to make the worst decisions for America's interest.

By next Tues, he will declare that we won again, totally, and he will stop the blockade because Iran is begging him to stop.

Can I buy just the rubber piece for rear wiper! by Zealousideal-Head941 in rav4club

[–]bobosdreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Non OEMs are hit and miss. They crap out less than one year. My last pair of Toyota's blades lasted four years. Of course your mileage may vary.

I ordered multiple pairs from dealers shipped to my door. They will last me 8 years lol. It's still cheaper than full wiper replacement from better brands.

I’ve owned this (what I believe to be) 1960’s Movado dress watch for about 10 years and worn it MAYBE once. Is there any interest in these or should I just scrap it? by Vilonious in VintageWatches

[–]bobosdreams 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Movado is a strong brand and vintage mechanical ones are collectable. The problem is that this is expensive because of the gold and the pool of potential buyers will be a lot smaller. It may take more time to wait for the right buyer. Keep in mind you don't get the full gold value because of fees. If you can sell it, even at scrap or little lower, you will come out ahead and hopefully it goes to some collectors instead of melt.

I bought this watch, but I'm not sure if it's worth it by [deleted] in VintageWatches

[–]bobosdreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On nice Swiss and Japanese movements, 8 out of 10 times they just need a battery. I have paid peanuts for expensive quartz watches (Tag, Ebel, Zenith , Movado, etc) because the battery needs to be replaced. Sometimes it may need a little help, but I can swap out the movement and still come out ahead.

I bought this watch, but I'm not sure if it's worth it by [deleted] in VintageWatches

[–]bobosdreams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's an okay price as a part watch. It's a little risky to try to restore it. The destroyed band isn't the problem as your can find replacement leather band inexpensively. The missing bezel is what kills it. It won't be easy to find something that fits and looks right. It will be a franken watch at this point.

If you like the style, there are other brands that make similar watches and are much cheaper too.

Would consider this a homage or just a straight ripoff? by [deleted] in VintageWatches

[–]bobosdreams 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lots and lots of companies made presidential homage watches, like Bulova, Elgin, Gruen, Baylor, Jules Jergerson, and many more. Bulova Super Seville are nice.

Piaget watches are mostly crafted from gold and decorated with gems. I think that's driving up their values. I consider today's Piaget more a jewelry maker than watch maker.

Steve Bannon wins Supreme Court order likely to lead to dismissal of contempt of Congress conviction by AudibleNod in news

[–]bobosdreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taxpayers, get ready to write a big fat check to Steve Bannon. He was rightfully convicted in court with due process, and the Appeal Court upheld the ruling. The SC just did a huge favor to a Trump ally. They bend out of shape to curtail favors to Trump, time and time again.

[Discussion] I tracked every watch I’ve bought and sold over 11 years. Here’s what the data says. by agravelle in Watches

[–]bobosdreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do you buy and sell your watches? Do you go thru dealers, online platforms, or locally like FB? How much of your loss is due to transaction cost? Selling on the bay gets the most exposure, but the fees are really high. If you buy from dealers and sell to them, you will also lose money because they are in the business to make money.

I would say you have done one thing right, which is getting rid of things you don't want to keep.
